I witnessed a nurse employed at our hospital showing a handgun she keeps in her locker to several reps Who were visiting in our department.
I am a little concerned and was wondering what the policy is on guns inside the hospital facility in the state of Mississippi. Can anyone advise me on what to do?
Excuse me? I was just referring to the policy at my facility and the consequences. And if you can't read that sign then yes, you will get fired. No need for a smart mouth response. Jeez.
You are excused. This thread has gone on to discuss the legal right to carry VS the hospital policy. Far from a smart mouth response.. we are discussing MY legal right to carry a concealed weapon... as opposed to hospital policy.
I do not know about Texas law if you have a permit, but I do know that many workplace environments prohibit it. She needs to keep it in her car or at home. Does not sound very responsible (and I am all for the right to carry!)
OP Has stated she is not in Texas. WHATEVER. The law varies by state. Anyone that has earned a CPL , will be highly aware of the regulations. That is what makes us licensed to carry.
We have a conceal carry permit here in NC but all weapons are prohibited in the hospital no matter what.
I will carry my weapon no matter what. If it comes down to hospital policy .. I DON'T care about their policy. My weapon is concealed. They will never know.
Until the time comes that I need to use my weapon.
When I feel the need to brandish / use my weapon... I will have the advantage.. over the aggressor. My Glock is the great equalizer.
Seems to me an employer can set a rule in force that disallows an otherwise legal activity....and they do so ALL the time.
Example? How about smoking? It's a perfectly legal activity, but a hospital has the right to say "not on my property you don't!"
I'd think if a hospital can set a rule that makes a legal activity not permissible with something like smoking, they sure as heck can take away any notion of a concealed gun, permit or not.
If the weapon is always under wraps, so to speak, then the employer doesn't know about it. Doesn't make it authorized, just....hidden. Much like those cigarettes people sneak into their cars to use.......
In the majority of cases, the signs are there to make the average citizen feel safe, and to satisfy some Liability Insurance carrier's lawyers. Only in certain states do signs posted by private businesses carry any weight of the law, and only if they meet very specific guidelines. Business owners or their representatives can obviously ask a visitor to leave or punish employees not adhering to policy, but there is nothing "illegal" outside of charges of trespassing if one were to refuse to leave when asked.
Here in AZ where we have "constitutional carry" aka any adult, non-prohibited citizen can carry concealed or even openly, outside of very specific circumstances. We openly discuss firearms-related topics, swap firearms among one another, go shooting in groups, etc. "We" meaning nursing staff, leadership, medical staff, etc. Spend an hour in any large store in the area and you will witness openly carried weapons. Having said all that, the subject of OP's story displayed staggeringly poor judgement.
OP please do not report someone for trying to protect themselves. Yes it wasn't the brightest idea to make that information public or to "show people" since it could be stolen out of a locker or a paranoid person could report her.
Her intention is not to hurt any co-workers I assume, her intention is for self protection, and rightfully so in this world we live in. So unless she made a threat to you or anyone else please respect her second amendment rights and keep quiet! Hopefully she will get a bit smarter and not share that with people in the future, gun is not something you show off in a public setting (unless you are at the gun range of course with other people who guns)!
