Hello nurses! I was hoping to gain your opinion on something. I am a young nurse, who has been in the field for about a year now. I have a bubbly, bright personality. For years now I have been wearing clip in fabric hair flowers daily, in my bangs, and have continued to do so as a nurse. My patients think that it's cute, and I often get compliments from them. I am often called "the nurse with the flower". I continue to wear them, mostly because my patients and their families seem to appreciate it. However, at times coworkers act as though they think this is odd. I am starting at a new facility soon, and I wonder if I should continue wearing my "signature" hair flowers. As a nurse, would you consider it unprofessional to wear hair flowers? Is it silly? I appreciate your opinions.
Too funny. 5 pages of comments on hair accessories! Well, I may as well add to them. I'd much rather see a nurse with a flower hair clip than a nurse with a birds nest mess of hair. As long as your facility allow it, go for it. Even if it is against "official" dress code, maybe go for it anyway. I know where I work there are several official personal appearance codes courtesy of the corporate handbook that are completely ignored. Visible piercing and tattoo policies are certainly not enforced. Nor is the silly one specifying what shoes are acceptable, the policy specifically prohibits clogs yet at least 2/3 of the nurses wear them daily. I doubt if anybody even read the dress code section of the policy, and if they did nobody including management cares as long as we look neat and clean.
Wow, thank you for all the responses! I really appreciate the feedback. Yes, they are easily hand washed. No, they do not dangle in my field of vision. In fact, they help hold my thick bangs back from falling in my field of vision.
After all of your comments, I plan to ask my new supervisor about her opinion on my hair flowers. Thank you again for your feedback!
I'd much rather see hair accessories over having long hair that isn't pulled back. MANY nurses at my facility wear their long hair down and it makes me cringe. They'll don full PPE in an isolation room, provide pt care where their hair invariably brushes the pt or something else in the room, and after exiting they'll run their fingers through their hair.
While I have everyone gathered here, let me say that I am very jealous of a lot of you.For some reason, my head is shaped in such a way that I can't wear headbands! I love them but I can't wear them. I especially like the fabric ones that go all the way around. They slide off of my head backwards each and every time. And the traditional head bands give me a headache because although I be but little, the size of my head is fierce.
Sorry, as you were.
I sympathize with you, DLHW....we share the same head shape
(My brain is real big too)

I feel your pain. Have you tried Bobby pins with the headband?
