Are hair accessories unprofessional?

Published

Hello nurses! I was hoping to gain your opinion on something. I am a young nurse, who has been in the field for about a year now. I have a bubbly, bright personality. For years now I have been wearing clip in fabric hair flowers daily, in my bangs, and have continued to do so as a nurse. My patients think that it's cute, and I often get compliments from them. I am often called "the nurse with the flower". I continue to wear them, mostly because my patients and their families seem to appreciate it. However, at times coworkers act as though they think this is odd. I am starting at a new facility soon, and I wonder if I should continue wearing my "signature" hair flowers. As a nurse, would you consider it unprofessional to wear hair flowers? Is it silly? I appreciate your opinions.

While I have everyone gathered here, let me say that I am very jealous of a lot of you.

For some reason, my head is shaped in such a way that I can't wear headbands! I love them but I can't wear them. I especially like the fabric ones that go all the way around. They slide off of my head backwards each and every time. And the traditional head bands give me a headache because although I be but little, the size of my head is fierce.

Sorry, as you were.

I used to have the same problem with slippage and annoyance, but I found a brand that stays put for 12+ hours, for running 5Ks, for everything! The wide part is lined in velvet. They are brilliant! Google banded2gether if you are interested. I love them!

I googled and came up with this????

My new workplace actually has policies about hair accessories; for example, headbands must be a solid color and no more than an inch wide. Just stay within the boundaries of policy and be yourself. :)

Really? no more than an inch wide? I always recommend stretchy headbands to students that have the kind of wispy bangs that are just perfect for getting into wound care and sterile field. I think the ones they typically sell are more than an inch wide though. But they look nice/professional/neat.

As for the OP I am picturing bangs with a flower hanging in there that is primed to...fall into wound care and sterile field. Am I imagining the wrong thing?

I am pretty sure that one of my former coworkers might wear that to work.

I don't see it as a big deal. I wear fun headbands. Unless it's against company policy, do what you want to do and don't worry about anybody else.

If you're worried about it, maybe just don't wear anything too flashy to the interview. After you get the job, you can slowly introduce your fun style, and if anyone has a problem with it they'll tell you.

I do the same thing. Sometimes I'll wear flowers, and sometimes I'll even wear pig tails. My patients love that I'm fun and bubbly! My point is, I don't care what crotchety people think. They're just jealous because they can't pull it off! Be you, and have fun with it! :)

The question may be moot. Many facilities have dress codes prohibiting hair accessories of a certain type or size. My employer prohibits headbands wider than 1/2 inch, head scarves, or hair accessories larger than a certain size. They might not say anything to you when they see it, but they may be documenting your violations of the dress code and if you're ever in any trouble, they pull out the documentation. Check your dress code carefully to be sure your flowers are allowed.

This is more controversial than the tattoo threads.

Ready? I want to be pro this time. You can be con.

I'd far more object to tatts or piercings than hair clips or headbands.
