Are hair accessories unprofessional?

Nurses Professionalism

Published

Hello nurses! I was hoping to gain your opinion on something. I am a young nurse, who has been in the field for about a year now. I have a bubbly, bright personality. For years now I have been wearing clip in fabric hair flowers daily, in my bangs, and have continued to do so as a nurse. My patients think that it's cute, and I often get compliments from them. I am often called "the nurse with the flower". I continue to wear them, mostly because my patients and their families seem to appreciate it. However, at times coworkers act as though they think this is odd. I am starting at a new facility soon, and I wonder if I should continue wearing my "signature" hair flowers. As a nurse, would you consider it unprofessional to wear hair flowers? Is it silly? I appreciate your opinions.

I wear a small bow clip almost every day to hold back my bangs. I usually color coordinate it with my scrubs. I see nothing wrong with it.

I don't think it's unprofessional at all, but it isn't to my personal taste.

Check with your new place's policy. If it's OK, go for it.

I love them! In the same way, we all have unique personalities and if we were all the same what fun is that? [emoji4]

I wouldn't see it as a big deal personally as long as it didn't hang down from your head and impede your vision or be an infection control issue (i.e. if it was designed in a way that would make it a likely vector for infectious organisms). As far as its professional appearance goes, I have coworkers who work with primarily adult patients and frequently wear scrubs with cartoon characters on them (not a judgement but merely a statement of fact). I would be more concerned about professionalism with the cartoon scrubs in a non-pediatric setting versus the nurse wearing a floral hair accessory, but then again I say whatever floats your boat.

I've worked with a nurse with flower clips and it looked good. Most just go as far as headbands

Not a fan of flowery headpieces.

Then don't wear them

Why should a nurse have to show up to work 'dowdy'? Wearing a pretty headband or accessory, simple conservative jewelry and makeup is all we have since we have to wear scrubs. And thank God I work in an environment where we can wear scents. My makeup and hairstyle is conservative so I don't care what any "no style" coworkers think

Sooo, you wouldn't mind working with me, if I wore them?

I wish I could wear a baseball cap backwards, wait, I do! Nothing worse than helmet hair after landing from a aeromedical run, I keep a baseball cap in my flight suit pocket. The baseball cap is branded with our hospital system's logo LOL! Believe it or not as a guy I do care what my hair looks like hahahahahaha

Wear what YOU want to wear, don't worry about what other people prefer.

Of course within the limits of your organizations dress code.
