Are hair accessories unprofessional?

Nurses Professionalism

Published

Hello nurses! I was hoping to gain your opinion on something. I am a young nurse, who has been in the field for about a year now. I have a bubbly, bright personality. For years now I have been wearing clip in fabric hair flowers daily, in my bangs, and have continued to do so as a nurse. My patients think that it's cute, and I often get compliments from them. I am often called "the nurse with the flower". I continue to wear them, mostly because my patients and their families seem to appreciate it. However, at times coworkers act as though they think this is odd. I am starting at a new facility soon, and I wonder if I should continue wearing my "signature" hair flowers. As a nurse, would you consider it unprofessional to wear hair flowers? Is it silly? I appreciate your opinions.

I'd much rather see hair accessories over having long hair that isn't pulled back. MANY nurses at my facility wear their long hair down and it makes me cringe. They'll don full PPE in an isolation room, provide pt care where their hair invariably brushes the pt or something else in the room, and after exiting they'll run their fingers through their hair.

YUCK!

Yuck. My hair is long, but with long hair comes almost inconceivable hair loss. I swear I don't know how I'm not bald at this point. If I wore my hair down there would be little traces of me all over the hospital!

(I know it's gross, but come on long-haired people--you know it's true.)

I feel your pain. Have you tried Bobby pins with the headband?

I have not. That sounds dangerous, though. They usually don't let me have sharp things.

Can confirm. I shed worse than my pets.

As long as they stay in your hair and it's not against the dress code, it's not harming anybody. Especially if your patients like it and it matches your personality. :)

I don't think it's unprofessional at all. Co-workers that look at you odd should probably spend more time focusing on their patients than on fake flowers on somebody's head.

I used to work at a pediatric office prior to working in the hospital and one day, when my "big girl scrub" were all in the laundry, I had to wear my Mr. Potato Head scrub top. That top made more patients smile than anything else, especially the elderly, so from then on I sporadically wore my pediatric tops as they were great conversation starters and made everyone smile.

Same with your" signature" hair flowers. It can be if it's beautiful and not harming anybody. And I liked ideas with flowers. I just googled and found really gorgeous ideas http://newaylook.com/best-flower-girl-hairstyles/ ,it seems not for work but for party is great.
