Published

Per the request of janina08 ;) I've started the April NCLEX takers support group. When do you take it? What are you using to study? Would anyone like to review any of the systems/meds that he/she feels weakest on? Let's keep each other in our prayers and good thoughts as we go through one of the biggest experiences of our lives. :) :nurse:

PROZAC and other SSRIs prevent the reabsorption or reuptake of serotonin so its made available in the brain thus improving mood...Its also believed that depressed patients have low serotonin which causes depression/OCD(underlying depression and anxiety)..

Question:

In FIBROCYSTIC disorder of breasts : WHY are we supposed to ASSESS the breast lumps BEFORE period and not after period? It said, it goes with cyclical hormonal changes. So how does that cyclical hormonal changes relate with assessing BEFORE period? Someone please explain. Thanks a lot.

Or please elaborate on cyclical hormonal changes, please. big thankyou

actually i think they tell u to check AFTER your period so that your breast are not as tender as they are before your period, this also helps in keeping tract of when you do ur self check which is suppose to be everymonth..

and with scrotal exam it is ideal to check after a shower coz the scrotum are more relaxed.. correct me if im wrong guys

"Normally, the levels of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone fluctuate during the menstrual cycle. Milk glands and ducts enlarge and breasts retain fluid when levels increase, and the breasts return to normal when levels decrease. (These fluctuations partly explain why breasts are swollen and more sensitive during a particular time of each menstrual cycle.) Fibrocystic changes may result from repeated stimulation by these hormones."

The cause of fibrocystic breast changes isn't completely understood. But the condition is thought to be associated with hormone fluctuations during a woman's menstrual cycle. Signs and symptoms, which typically worsen right before menstruation, include:

Dense, lumpy breast tissue

Feeling of fullness in the breasts

Pain and tenderness that tends to be generalized and may radiate to the underarm

Nipple discharge that's often greenish-brown in color

Breast cysts that are identified on breast ultrasound

Although fibrocystic breast changes don't increase your risk of breast cancer, having lumpy and tender breasts may make it more challenging to do breast self-exams. For this reason, it is important to familiarize yourself with how your breasts feel by monitoring for any new changes.

If you choose to perform breast self-exams, schedule them for a week after your period ends-when hormonal fluctuations decrease and breast tissue feels less lumpy and tender
