Hi! Is anyone applying to UCLA's MECN program? Last year I applied and wasn't accepted. I believe they accepted around 12%. They had 70 spaces down from 90 the previous year.
I just happened to be awake and checked my app status and found my rejection letter there. It wasn't there earlier in the evening and I never received an email. So if you are waiting you might want to check your app status again. Congrats to everyone that got in, and to the rest of us...just keep swimming!
Good morning everyone!! I woke up to an email directing me to the appstatus webpage. And.. I found my rejection letter! lol
I am a bit surprised, because I considered myself very qualified, and prepared for the rigor since I am currently a UCLA student. But also, UCLA's program didn't pull at my heart. and God knows what is best for me! I am excited to find out what His plans are for me.
I wish you all the very best, I will pray for all of you future nurses! Be the very best you can :)

I received my rejection letter as well. However, I know there's a reason for it and for some reason it wasn't meant to be. On the bright side, I was accepted to Cal State San Marcos 😊 so at least if I end up not getting into CSUN as well then I know I will be going somewhere for nursing this year. Best of luck to all of you who were accepted and those on the waitlist! 😊
Hi All -
I just got the rejection letter. I am devastated.
My pre-requisit courses were all A's (except for 2 A+s and 1 A-), I had a little under 100 hours of UCLA Santa Monica volunteer experience, and I had my statement of purpose reviewed by someone who is currently very knowledgeable about MECN program.
My volunteer experience is at the Geriatric Ward, and it is basically clerical and elderly patient feeding program.
I did ask the school why I was rejected.
Is there any hints as to what could have improved my application? I really want to apply next year.
Thanks!
Hi Everyone,
I had been patiently waiting and then nervously freaking out like so many of you, only to wake this morning to find my rejection letter as well. It stings getting rejected by anyone, but at least the uncertainty is finally over! I feel great relief mixed with disappointment. Like others, I too thought I was a decent candidate and thought I had a chance of at least getting wait-listed. I had been accepted last year to SUNY Stonybrook's Accelerated BSN program but had to decline because I found myself going through a difficult separation from my husband. When I moved back to California from the east coast last year, I decided I wanted to do a direct entry N.P. program, but dealing with the divorce and everything else that comes with moving back into your mother's one bedroom made it darn near impossible to prepare for the GRE, which most of the grad programs required. Anyway, I decided for UCLA based upon not needing to take the GRE as well as their public health emphasis. There were other factors involved as well, but I am now willing to admit that the program may have not been the best fit for me, nor I for the program. Here's a little more about me re: application stats: I had all As in the prereqs, a 3.66 GPA from UCSD (Lit major), CNA certification, mental health worker experience at psychiatric SNF, 2 years volunteer activity coordinator at psych hospital, great LORs from my microbiology teacher (for whom I tutored for also), UCSD lit professor and nurse coordinator of the program where I volunteered. I thought my SOP was decent as well. I had faculty and other people who actually help students write SOPs for a living assist me. Therefore, my conclusion is that I just wasn't what they were looking for. I could have made more of an effort to stand out in the SOP as well, but I took a more conservative approach. However, at least I've gone through this experience. It has taught me more about the process, made me more reflective about what kind of nurse I want to become, and it has been humbling. So all of you who got "bad" news this morning, keep your chins up! We'll be all the more prepared and stronger from this experience when we face the next round of applications! And my sincerest congratulations to all who have been accepted and wait-listed. Thanks for all the support and updates!
Congrats to those accepted, UCLA was my first choice school due to location and future job opportunities. However, I'm leaning towards a specific master's program rather than CNL for master's, CRNA, or NP, so an ABSN is actually ideal for me. I know it sucks to get rejected, but it also means it was not meant to be. I've been accepted at Hopkins, MGH, Emory, Miami, George Washington, and still waiting on a few others. It's a very very difficult choice for me, as I know I want to live in a big city. Here's a little for my stats:
Epi and Chem 2 outstanding.
I had a 3.5 GPA undergrad in music from UCLA, B+ in an English class, and repeated Chem 14A. The rest all A's.
I have about 150 hrs volunteering at UCLA Santa Monica working with nurses. I am also multilingual.
I received great LORs, I submitted 4 actually, one from a TA and also RN from a class I took at UCLA Nursing, another from MECN graduate, charge nurse/supervisor at volunteering, and microbiology professor.
Got my rejection letter before going to sleep last night. It was disappointing because I would have loved to return to my Alma Mater, and honestly I know people from pervious cohorts that I don't think were as qualified! I have an interview at Cal State LA in a few hours...I'm trying not to let UCLA's rejection get to me today! Wish me luck! Congrats to all who were accepted, and for those who weren't, we will find our place!

Howdy! I just barely found this site. I received an email today informing me I'm #49 on the waitlist... So I might be crossing my fingers that an act of God gets me to the top! I read in an old thread that they went to #60 for 2012, so ya never know :)
