Application for Exam at California Board of Nursing - Help!

hi! i hope someone can help me. i am a graduate of nursing in the philippines (batch 2009) and i'm planning to apply for the state boards in california. i have been checking the website www.rn.ca.gov for information.

in the information i got from the site it says, "transcripts are required from all colleges and/or universities you attended that reflect courses required for a degree in nursing, including general education course requirements and all nursing courses."

before i started to take up nursing on 2006, i was already a graduate of ab mass communication on 2002 from a university different from where i finished my nursing. i also took some units (for another course) from another university before i shifted to mass comm. in both these schools, some minor subjects (like english, philosophy, algebra, etc) were credited in my nursing curriculum. my question is, would i need to request for transcript from them too? then if these transcripts have to be directly sent from the schools to the california board of nursing, then they will have to arrive separately - will that be okay?

also, would the transcript need to indicate "for foreign exam purposes only"?

thank you.

alma

Thanks for the quick reply.

Today I got my Transcripts from both schools where I have graduated college. Both are sealed but in my possession. Now I am wondering if it's okay to send them both in one package thru Fedex? Or would they have to be sent individually from a post office near the school? I mean, does it matter where they were sent from? Would the Ca BRN question it if they came together considering that these are transcripts from two different universities in two different cities?

Hi alma_kyle,

yes, no problem with that, I have a friend who sent her credentials in one mailing too- in that case she was able to save for the cost of it. 'The other one , also includes even her application form, it's like 3-in 1.You have a choice between a FEDEX (which of course takes only 2-3 days) or registered mail,4 weeks. If you want your paper to reach the CA BRN the quickest possible time, choose the former. The place where you choose to mail it doesnt matter, once it's sealed, i guess it's enough proof that those papers were issued to you by the proper authority.

best of luck!!

Hi! I'm almost done with my requirements for the Ca BRN. I am now at the point where I am preparing to send the application. My question now is would I really have to pay for the Interim Permit fee? I know it's only like $30 but I see in the requirements for an Interim Permit it says that I would have passed TOEFL. I have not taken the TOEFL exam. Would that mean it's pointless paying the $30? What's the Interim Permit for, anyway? Or can I just take the IELTS?And also, I dont know much about where I could inquire, review, and take the TOEFL exam. Can you help me with some more information? Thanks a lot.

The interim permit will allow you to work as an IP which means that you're working as a a nurse pending passing your NCLEX-RN but mind you that if you don't pass the exam then you will lose your IP status and can't retain it again. I've heard of some hospitals that are not accepting the IP because the pass rates were poor when they were hiring them. Also you need to have a ss# in order to receive your license and IP. I believe you don't qualify for IP, I think it's just for the citizens and legal residents of California. If you don't have a ss# or a valid working visa then I wouldn't go the IP route because it will be useless. Good Luck

Unless you are already in the US with a valid work/immigrant visa then going the IP route will not work for you.

hi alma_kyle,

No need to apply for an interim permit. Just the application and the fee plus the fingerprinting card and all other requirements from respective authorities mentioned /needed in the application process.

For the english exam, I have taken IELTS.

goodluck.

Please proceed with your application as it will take 3 months or more waiting for your eligibility.

All the best.

Thanks a lot! I will mail them tomorrow thru Fedex.

But wait, one quick question... In my fingerprint card, what do I put in the space for 'race'? Is it 'A' for Asian? Or 'B' for brown? Sorry if I sound silly...

It does sound silly, but I don't think you're reading it correctly either. Post what it sais thoroughly and I will check it out to see if I can understand it because from your post I can't understand it. Sorry

Hehe! Because in the manual that they supplied what is supposed to be written, for example - BLK for black eyes/hair. But it didn't say what are my choices for the 'race'.

So what choices are you given for ethnic backgrounds?

I sincerely hope that you know that "brown" is a colour and not a race!

Yes, I know. You have a point. But at some time in the past I remember in my dad's Philippine passport it indicated "brown" for 'race'... And we are pure Filipinos.

When I was doing my fingerprints at NBI, the other RN beside me wrote "A" for Asian.

In the reference provided by the Ca BRN http://www.rn.ca.gov/pdfs/applicants/exam-app.pdf , page 6, it indicated the instructions for completing the fingerprint card. It said something about the Height, Weight, Color of Eyes/Hair, but it didnt say anything about the race. :-(
