does anyone really wait that long?!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hey everyone just wondering if anyone knows someone or has thmeselves waited more than a year to get into a nursing program? could you reapply and get in faster? if you did wait what did you do while waiting.

Are you going for RN or BSN? I'm graduating from an LVN class and since I want to continue to an ADN or RN program I decided to start researching now, about 3 weeks before graduation. Well, there is an accelerated program 20 min where I live and they have a waiting list full til 2007. Personally, i wouldn't wait that long. That's why I'm trying to look into online LVN to RN programs but problem is they seem to be all on the east coast.

Well, goodluck to ya!

I'm going for my ADN. Whooa 2007:eek:. My friends(non-nursing students) are scaring me with stories about 2 year waiting lists. I would like to know the outlook about waiting lists for BSN and ADN programs.

Most of the schools in my area have at least a 2 year waiting list as well. It seems the hardest nursing programs to get into, are ones at community colleges because it's so much cheaper. The problem is that since it's so cheap, hundreds of people apply for 25 spots. Before I was accepted into my program, I considered going to a private university so I wouldn't have to wait. Good thing I got into the cc program because the private school wanted $28,000 a year not including books AND it was a 3 year ADN program. So basically, I would have left there about $90,000 in the hole!

I waited for two years. I would have only had a one year wait, but because there were so many of us and only so many slots, I got held up a year. Here it goes by the date on your application and whether you have all you LPN prereqs. done. Guess there were people who had waited longer then me at that point. We only start a new program every fall. That is a big down fall here. It was worth the wait though. I am managing to finish all my RN prereqs. while I wait. I guess all good things come to those who wait. Not only that but it really worked out for the best financially. I am managing to pay off some bills before I start the program.

Magz80 is right. There is a longer wait for community college bec. they're cheaper. I think average wait is minimum 2 years for cc. Accelerated programs for ADN (at least where I am, near L.A.) won't even start a waiting list anymore because the wait is past 3 years. I don't know if I want to postpone my education that long because I could have had or be on my way to a BSN. Besides, I'm motivated to go to school right now because I'm still in school. I know I'm going to get complacent if I take a break. I guess the reason for the nursing shortage is nursing SCHOOL shortage! :chuckle Have you thought about online courses?

I had to wait to get into my BSN program and competition is stiff to get into about any program. After I decided on the college I wanted, I met again with the nursing admissions advisor and got a list of all the prereqs to their program. I then met with a local community college and found out which ones I could take there that would transfer, since some prereqs could only be taken at my chosen institution. I spent 3 quarters at the community college, and began work on a Spanish minor, since that would be a complimentary degree. I kept my grades up and then applied to to the college and took institutional prereqs there. (My school only selects for the nursing program after a certain number of credit hours.) I was told later that I did all the right things to take me to the top of the admissions list. So, if you have to wait, use your time wisely by knocking out prereqs, getting as good of grades as possible, think about working on a complimentary minor while you wait, and doing everything you can to distinguish yourself from all those other candidates! Good luck!

I've been waiting 2 years already. I am down to #62 and they take 30 a year, so I still wait :(

I always tell my friends who are waiting to get into the program to show up on the first day of class, ask if anyone has dropped (which happens a lot because people get tired of waiting or get into a differant program) one friend was able to take the seat of an absence that day, luck i suppose but like i said, the lists are a pain, but the wait may be shorter then originally quoted.

Aslo some universities, like mine for example (San Diego State University), will except people based on a point system, so if you have the grades and experience you can get in with no waiting lists, this is preety cool, and at SDSU we only pay $1400 a semester, for 6 semesters (BSN) not to shabby for a nursing degree.

Have you thought about online courses?

Not until now where could I get more info?

I would say DOUBLE check with all programs in the area----many of them here only make a waiting list that is for the current year- more of an alternate list in case someone doesn't show. The list is NOT carried to the next year! If you do not get in, you MUST RE-APPLY. Be sure what kind of list and policy you're looking at- you wouldn't want to miss an opportunity.

OOOOHHHHHH now I get it.:imbar I know that at my school, u have to reapply every semester cause they said that your name will not automatically be kept on the list (luckily). Sorry, I totally forgot about that. Now I really feel sorry for the ones who really have no choice but to wait that long.
