does anyone really wait that long?!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hey everyone just wondering if anyone knows someone or has thmeselves waited more than a year to get into a nursing program? could you reapply and get in faster? if you did wait what did you do while waiting.

I didn't...900 applicants for 40 spaces. So, I did the LPN route instead. There were still 900 applicants for that program but I scored high and got in...now after I (hopefully) complete the LPN program I will move to LPN-ADN.

WOW!!!! weeee.....

hahah.... i guess hawaii isn't the only problem with that.... so really nobody knows of any nursing colleges whose admissions are easy to get into??? :p

a recruiting representative from Loma Linda University in Cali, told me that they have no waiting lists for their nursing program...however, at this point my gpa doesn't cut it for their program :crying2: ...hopefully this will help others out though ....small catch though, it's a private (seventh adventist, u don't have to be one thou) college with a $20k+ tuition rate :uhoh21: ....check it out though, it's good alternative for those who are willing to spend the money or can get financial aid, and have decent grades :D

I just started my first nursing courses about two weeks ago. It still feels so surreal -- I applied 4 times before getting in!! Two years of waiting is a long time... not to mention all the time I spent doing the prereq's... I feel for those who are still waiting. But don't give up. You will get there -- just take it, one day at a time.

GEESH, what were u guys GPA. I know for sure they weren't that bad. or does ur program go by other things besides GPA?

I'm in Tampa, FL and there are 3 schools to choose from. The problem is that 2 of those schools don't go by gpa and have an automatic 2 year waiting list (one said it may not take as long, but would at least be 1 year wait); it's first come, first serve. :stone The 3rd school is selective and I met a student who just got accepted and she said that the lowest g.p.a. that got in was a 3.8. The counselors are saying you should shoot to have a 4.0, and if you don't get in you just keep trying each semester until you do. :o

Mine was a 4.0. Still couldn't get in. Too long of a list (900 for 40 spots).

I don't believe that all programs have long wait lists. I applied in Oct. for 2 BSN programs, was accepted for one accelerated Spring 2005 right off the bat. The other I was told I could interview this spring for Summer or Fall admission, but got a call right before Christmas offering admission into the Spring class.

I think it depends upon the program and your qualifications.

Maybe it depends on the program.

Where I am, in the Los Angeles area, most of the community colleges had a lottery process -- as long as you completed the prereq's with a satisfactory grade, you were put in the lottery. Prereq's included English, Anatomy, Physiology, Psychology (intro to), and Microbiology. My school recently changed it to have a cut-off GPA depending on their applicant pool, and I think that might have boosted my chances for acceptance.

I was also accepted into a 4 year CSU school as a transfer, but then they told me that I'd need to submit a separate application for the nursing program! Sheesh. The hoops we have to jump through!

Our local community college doesn't have an opening to their nursing program until fall '07. In October, I decided to look into another program at a hospital just minutes from our house, and they had openings for fall '05. Their program is twice the tuition of the cc, but still very inexpensive.

I applied for the fall, took the TEAS (extrance exam) in early December and scored very well - 99th percentile in the nation. I still haven't heard from the admissions committee!!! I finally called the office and was told that the admissions committee meets this week, so I should hear by next week.

I'm using the spring & summer to take what my program calls "co-reqs" - A&P I and II, Microbio, Developemental Psych - so I won't have to take them with my nursing classes.

I had to wait to get into my BSN program and competition is stiff to get into about any program. After I decided on the college I wanted, I met again with the nursing admissions advisor and got a list of all the prereqs to their program. I then met with a local community college and found out which ones I could take there that would transfer, since some prereqs could only be taken at my chosen institution. I spent 3 quarters at the community college, and began work on a Spanish minor, since that would be a complimentary degree. I kept my grades up and then applied to to the college and took institutional prereqs there. (My school only selects for the nursing program after a certain number of credit hours.) I was told later that I did all the right things to take me to the top of the admissions list. So, if you have to wait, use your time wisely by knocking out prereqs, getting as good of grades as possible, think about working on a complimentary minor while you wait, and doing everything you can to distinguish yourself from all those other candidates! Good luck!

You did the right thing, that's exactly what I did at my community college so that I could transfer to a BSN program. Then I applied at the community college and they accepted me. So after getting my ADN, I'll get my BSN because I want to continue my education MSN Education. It only took me 3 semesters to complete my pre-reqs chem before AP 1, etc...in between I took two semesters of Spanish, Speech, Health, Literature, Statistics, Nutrition, and many more. So, don't waist any time, take more classes they will help you in the long run. However, make sure you aim high and get excellent grades.

Good Luck to All!!!:)

Have you thought about online courses?

Not until now where could I get more info?

Still researching myself. So far I've heard of Excelsior, Deaconess and University of Indiana. Go to the distance learning thread and you have enough reading/research materials for the next couple of nights :p I live in California so Excelsior is out but heard some good things about Deaconess.
