Any shoe suggestions for me? Dankso's aren't working...

Published

Ok everyone - need your help. I invested in a pair of Dankso's a few months ago in hopes of finding relief for my aching feet at the end of a shift. I must admit, at the end of a 12 hour day, my feet are now feeling pretty darn good in comparison to the NB's that I used to wear. HOWEVER, I find these Dansko's to be like wearing cement blocks on my feet. Now it's my LEGS that are killing me as I lug these things around!! I'm a very short/petite woman, so I'm guessing that my body may not like carrying around all of that extra weight on my feet. My legs are THROBBING at the end of a day, even with good support hose on.

Soooo.....I'm back to the drawing board. Do you know of any closed back clog type shoes that are as easy on your feet as Danskos, but do not weigh a ton? I've heard that the Birkis can be good, and maybe that Klog brand? I need help!! TIA!

I don't know if you really want the clog type, but I just got a pair of shoes from Lands End that area great! The are called all weather service mocs and they finally made them in white! They are all leather.

What you want is a pair of Crocs. There was a discussion about it on this board a couple of weeks ago. They weigh next to NOTHING, just feel like rubbery foam when you pick them up. They're supposed to be great, and the most expensive pair is only $50. One of our docs is wearing them, has them in tons of colors and swears by them. I'm ordering a pair myself, in white. They are clogs with an optional ankle strap. The original ones have ventilation holes on the top, but they now make two styles with a covered foot. Good luck!

I love my saucony (sp?) walkers. I find a GOOD pair of walkers is worth lots. Check out the nickname under my avatar, lol . I am truly "Ms. Sensible Shoes". A good pair of athletic shoes, covered in paper slippers, makes the most sense to me, keeping me fairly comfy on my feet for 12-14 hours, and safe. I dont' feel clogs are all that safe or sanitary in the OB setting, where we can wade in blood literally, in some cases. On med-surg, or ICU I can't imagine it's much better at times. Of course JMO.

I've been a nurse for a long time. I have had the best luck with Saucony running shoes (haven't tried the walkers--I'll have to look into them). Have worn them for the past 6 or 7 years. Just recently though I started wearing my Keen slip-on clog-type shoe with closed heel; not too heavy of a shoe, and very very comfortable. I had been wearing these shoes on all my days off, finally wore them to work one day and they are great. Can find them at Backwoods, or mail order from REI.

CROCS ROCK!!! Check them out, you won't be disappointed......

Nike Airliner's work best for me. Check 'em out.

SAS shoes are great - not always pretty - about $70 (I think) - put them on new and work without any problems.

Its not so much the weight of you shoes but the support. Sounds like you found support your feet like but now the lack there of is being transmitted to your legs. Had a podiatrist tell me one time that you will feel bad shoes in 3 places - your feet, your legs and then your back...The important thing is to find whats best for you ie if its a $10 shoe or a $200 one thats what you wear. The other key is to replace at regular intervals ie most athletic type shoes wether cross trainers, running or walkers only last about 500 miles which converts to about 6 months based on 36-40 work weeks.

As far as what to try just search this board the topic has been discussed multiple times and everyone has their favorites and opinions. Just keep in mind that since shoes are a needed item for work and most of use use them just for work they are tax deductible just like the rest of our uniforms-- speak to your tax expert about this though.

rj:rolleyes:

I just go to Mervyn's and get the nicest running or walking shoe on sale - one that feels good.

I have the same trouble. What I have been doing is alternating between my Dansko's and my Rockers by Cherokee. I think the style is Milano. I spend a little more time in the Dansko's, but my heel pain gets me worse than my legs. But when they need a break, I wear the Rockers. They're really light. I may have to bite the bullet and get custom insoles, but I'm really trying to avoid it for as long as possible.
