I have been reading a lot of negative discussions about the nursing field and I must admit, I've considered changing my career path. Problem is, I can't see myself doing anything else. Please tell me that there are nurses out there that like their job!
I have never once ever regretted becoming a nurse. I came to nursing as a second career in my 40's too! My only regret is that I had been smart enough to have entered nursing as a younger woman. My career path may have been the same....I'm now working on my MSN in nursing education and also want to become a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner...but I would be so much farther into my career than I am now! I love nursing!
I have at times regretted becoming a nurse..but it has been for brief moments when work has been hectic for what seems days on end.
In the end, I know it's part of who I am. I cannot imagine doing any thing else. and believe me, I have tried to imagine! LOL. Nursing is always there....always a way to provide for my family , and gives me some happiness along the way too!
My only regret about nursing is that I didn't go into it sooner: I could have been a nurse during the economy's glory years, instead of being a new grad right when the job market for nurses started tanking.
Then again, I also believe everything happens for a reason...and perhaps becoming a nurse when I did is what was meant to be.
I'm 26 years in to being an LPN and I still love what I do! Now if you ask me if I enjoyed my day today at work, oh heck no! but not every day is bad and it's worth it when you see someone out in the community months after you thought they were a goner and they're doing well. Or someone comes up to you and says you were always my favorite nurse, or when I felt so bad, you really helped me to feel better. I was born to be a nurse and can't imagine anything else. Btw, to anyone who thinks they are too old to go back to school, I'm 46 and have finished up my pre-reqs for RN school and am just waiting to see if I will be in the accelerated class that starts in Jan 2014!

I love what I do. It's been such an interesting path for me but nursing has somehow always come through with an opportunity that fit the need and proclivity at every turn. I haven't worked for a hospital for years, but I have always been a nurse and use my background every working day. Attorneys hire me precisely because I am a nurse, and they do respect it.
