the scorpions are really dependent on where you live. You can purchase a house that has a real problem and then another next door hasn't seen one in years. Don't let the scorpions discourage you from coming to AZ. The job market may do that for you. If you find a job, I'd say "go for it". However, finding a job as a newly graduated RN may be difficult.

I graduated in Jan. 2009 and still have not found a job. I had to leave arizona because I couldnt find a job in enough time to pay rent. I miss Arizona and would take any job that I could find just to go back! Good luck!

We had scorpions more when we lived on the outskirts of town - close to desert and mountains. They are really no big deal.

I have lived in Arizona my whole life, the only time I would see a scorpion is when I lived at my parents 1 acre lot home that they had to irrigate. When they would irrigate the backyard the scorpions came in. I have been stung a couple times, lol no biggie!! The big scare is definately the job market, many nurses out here arent finding jobs:cry: I would hope that is going to change in a couple years when the market is more stable :coollook: Good luck

I'm a native Arizonan and as others have said, scorpions are not a big deal. You'll find them mostly in new developments on the outskirts of the city mostly. You'll find snakes there, too. So, if you aren't into "roughing it" with the native creatures, stay away from the outlying areas. All in all, they're really not that big a deal.

I just graduated last week. I started applying for jobs a few months ago. So far, no luck. LPN experience doesn't really count for RN experience, either, from what I've been told. I really don't want to move somewhere just because it's the only place I can find a job. When I move I want it to be because it's to a place I really want to go.

In Bakersfield they have some new grad positions, if you're looking at California...

BTW - You can spray for scorpions, too. They can just be a little more persistent. The spiders - i.e. Brown Recluse - are much more dangerous. But, I got bit by one of those once and I survived - obviously.

I am at a base of a mountain and get TONS of scorpions. We have an annual scoreboard. The record is 31 found INSIDE in one year. I guess it's the price you have to pay to live around a mountain. Pest control has never been able to kill them, they just act sort of drunkish and slow. The best way to control them is by smashing them!

I am surprised no one has mentioned black widow spiders. They are nasty creatures and like to hang out on patios. You can tell there web by how messy it is.

But, as others have mentioned, RN jobs are hard to find. It took me 4 months to find a new job with 3 years ICU experience and a CCRN. You might want to try searching at the magnet hospitals - they have a requirement to hire so many new grads a year.

I'd bet it's difficult to find positions in LTC/AL facilities as their census is down. Reportedly more family members are caring for loved one in their own homes. You'd think home health would be the answer but I'd bet they're suffering too. There aren't many places to hide from this economic downturn.

I've been stung by a scorpion. I've killed many scorpions. It's really not that bad.

The job market in AZ is far scarier than scorpions, IMHO.

I know crickets are not dangerous but one year our neighborhood had an invasion of them. We had weekly neighborhood BBQ's and awarded a prize to the family that caught the most inside their house in a 24 hr period. The record was 38 crickets. And crickets attract scorpions as they are their food source.

No one has mentioned tranulas. While riding horses in Sedona, I pointed out a tranula to my husband that was walking near the trail. Our hound ran up to it, threw it in the air, and gobbled it down in one bite!
