I just graduated from the LPN program and got the invitation. I'm planning to go back to that school and apply for the LPN-RN bridge program hopefully within this year or next year. Thing is, will it help when looking for jobs? Also, they give you something to wear during graduation in June but I already graduated at the end of Winter quarter (march 2012) - unless I go to the "official" graduation in June.
My mom LOVES it though and said many new grads (who've been lucky to be invited) used it on their resumes. (She's been a nurse for 30+ years). I guess I'd be doing this more for my mom than me. She's over the moon about it. I'm just glad I passed and graduated. WHEW!
I was in it. Potential scholarships later and it looked good on my resume. Took a few days for volunteering requirements but nothing too extreme.

I joined my cc chapter for a resume builder and an nursing application builder as well. I also received an extra 3k to the BSN program I applied for and the admission counselor said to take advantage of anything that will make me stand out. Congratulations and good luck!
I go to a community college and was mailed a letter from my school, saying that I should join Phi Theta Kappa for my GPA. I was wondering if anyone here has joined and if it was worth it. I don't know if the $80 fee to join is worth it. In the pamphlet that came with the letter, they talk about how you can use them for reference letters and that sort of thing. Any input is appreciated!
Why not, might as well would look good in future I'm going to join once my gpa is a 3.5 I'm at a 3.3
If you're planning on transferring to finish your bachelors, then PTK is a great resource for transfer scholarships & letters of recommendation. Plus, you can usually get good volunteer/community service hours through them for scholarships.
The fee is one time for life (which isn't bad). It should look good on the resume et al. The only downside I've experienced from joining is SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM emails from colleges that have absolutely nothing to do with nursing.
Thank you.
Joined this as well. Went to the meetings from time to time. Looked good on a resume, recognition at graduation, and nice knowing that I succeeded at school.
80 dollars was nothing in the whole scheme of things.
Yeah, I was inducted to PTK as well then got inducted into Golden Key Society. Still waiting for my damned Sigma Theta Tau invite.
I am also trying to decide if it's worth joining...
Also got an invitation recently. Debating on joining just for the resume building. There was also some information that by being a member if you are hired by the federal government you start at a higher pay grade - anyone know if this is true? I'm open to working U.S. Public Health Service, Indian Affairs, VA, or Corrections down the line, so the higher pay thing could be useful.
With the possible exception of Sigma Theta Tau, I don't think Greek letters mean a whole lot in the nursing world. I'm also not sure what weight a "reference letter" from PTK would carry. If you're applying to graduate programs, for instance, they are going to ask you for reference letters from current/former supervisors, professors, etc. who know you and are familiar with your experience, abilities and other attributes, not from some honor society who only knows that once got good grades and sent them a check. Future employers aren't going to care if you're a member of PTK either.
