Any benefits with joining Phi Theta Kappa?

Nursing Students General Students Nursing Q/A

I just graduated from the LPN program and got the invitation. I'm planning to go back to that school and apply for the LPN-RN bridge program hopefully within this year or next year. Thing is, will it help when looking for jobs? Also, they give you something to wear during graduation in June but I already graduated at the end of Winter quarter (march 2012) - unless I go to the "official" graduation in June.

My mom LOVES it though and said many new grads (who've been lucky to be invited) used it on their resumes. (She's been a nurse for 30+ years). I guess I'd be doing this more for my mom than me. She's over the moon about it. I'm just glad I passed and graduated. WHEW!

This answer comes from my college professor husband who is a phi beta kappa member.

"It definitely will have it's advantages in the workforce because ptk only accepts people of quality. This honor shows that you've made very good grades and that you are a person of integrity, with high standards of character and morality. This honor is usually only awarded to the cream of the crop. it makes it much easier, when you go on, to be accepted into phi beta kappa."

I graduated in 1994 as a Phi Theta Kappa member. It's been great to use on resumés all these years. Employers are usually impressed that I was an Honors student in college. It's definitely opened some doors for me. I'd say go for it...there's no drawback to it.

I was an officer in our PTK chapter and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Now that I'm going back to school almost 20 years later, I've contacted my school's PTK chapter to re-join the ranks. I met some wonderful people in PTK and there are a few I've kept in touch with throughout the years.

Congratulations! :D

I was a member in community college years ago. I just recently went back to college at the University of Mississippi this semester. To my surprise they gave me $1500 dollars for the semester just for being a member. I just had to show them proof. I found an old membership card in my closet, lol. They give 3k a year and 6k max. I won't be going back next semester since I am transferring but that $1500 really helped out. So yeah it does have benefits.

If you plan on getting your BSN I highly recommend it! I'm a member and will be getting a $18,000 scholarship when I transfer to my BSN program this fall. Definitely worth the $65 membership fee!! :-)

Oh, and you can save money on car insurance too! ha :-)

I joined last semester. Sadly, it will not help me with scholarships since I will be going to a private college. But, many of the local public universities have PTK scholarships. I also think it will look good on my resume. Congrats!

If you are planning to finish your BSN, PTK is very helpful for obtaining transfer scholarships. You can also use it as a plus when listing accomplishments when you're filling out scholarship applications. It also looks very good on a resume. Some chapters have their own scholarship program (depends on the school and level of your chapter). For example, when I went to college in FL, if you were a PTK member, you got a 50% discount on tuition. However, the school I go to now only gives $500 towards books for being a PTK member. So, you'll have to check with your chapter's advisor or one of the officers for details on their program.

Just bear in mind that PTK is a service-oriented organization, so you get out of it what you put in to it. Many of the chapters have a minimum required amount of service or volunteer hours to qualify for their in-house scholarship programs.

Heya!

I joined Phi Theta Kappa because it looks good on your resume, and not only that, but I get an extra 1000$ per year as a PTK scholarship. It might not sound like much, but every bit helps!

Totally up to you, but the 75$ I spent inititally has paid off :)

Good luck to you!

Sarah

I have received an invitation to join my cc chapter of ptk, is it worth it? What exactly are the benefits?

Thanks,

Admittedly I was unfamiliar with your Phi Theta Kappa association. (Had to Google it.) Would like to say congratulations on your academic achievements and your invitation. And your mom is rightly proud also. Just FYI, I am a member of Sigma Theta Tau, International, The Honor Society of Nursing. It is on my resume, as well as the designation of WITH HONORS for my college graduation. Don"t know if anybody else cares, BUT I DO. And get your key/pin. Again, congratulations.

Thank you, that's very sweet of you!

I'm debating if I should join it. I gotta pay $65 but is it nice to have? Do you think it'll help on resumes?

Ditto to you Jen> Just FYI, I graduated more years ago than you are probably old, but thank you.

...also, being a member saved me money on my car insurance. Ha! No lie. :)

It says you have good grades--all that honor and integrity stuff, that's just what they say. There's no real vetting of that.
