  1. I graduated with my BSN in 2015 and went straight to a pediatric home health as well but this specific agency didnt have enough hours for me and I ended up doing a new grad program in labor and delivery. I absolutely hated it. It wasn't for me but I definitely learned a lot regarding protocols, prioritization, emergency medicine, how to delegate, start IV's, manage medication administration and scheduling, learning multiple doctors wants and needs, charting etc, something that I know HH would've never taught me. Fast forward 8 months and I had had enough. This specific hospital had horrible standards of care and took no interest in actually caring for their patients needs at the most precious time in their lives. So I broke my contract and went back to pediatric home health (at a different organization) and absolutely love it. I too am only doing GB for now because even though i have LD experience and have delivered babies...these children are in my hands ALONE and I feel like I need to build my confidence level up before I advance to trachs and vents. This is just my opinion and how I work but going back to your original question I absolutely believe you would be of value at a hospital. Your working Alone, and can tackle both parents and children with rare diseases with which most are terminal. Play up your responsibilities and what you have learned in HH especially educating the family. I would also suggest getting certified (if you aren't already) in ACLS/PALS/NRP because most hospitals require this now at a BSN level or magnet hospital
  2. There are several locations. The two I'm familiar with in IL is tinley park, Chicago and Addison
  3. Hello, I'm currently at chamberlain in Addison and will be done fall 2015. Although I agree there are far more female than make students, there are a good portion of male students and the school also had an organization that male nursing students can join to get involved and help each other study etc. I myself am 31 and I find that there are an equal number of younger students 19-25 as there are 25+. The school is a "for profit" so in saying that there has been a couple situations regarding clinical placements shortages with certain classes due to the influx of students the school accepts. This is my issue with the school. However, I have had a great experience with the instructors until I came to medsurg and in my opinion they just weren't up to par. You will have that in many schools though so I can't say it's just ours. We do have several military men and women in our class and they all seem to be able to keep up and help one another. As with any female population there is the gossip you will hear but many guys avoid this as do other girls bc you will find the LAST thing people have time for is other people's problems. This gossip usually comes from the younger crowd and doesn't affect classes. The teachers don't put up with class disruptions and there are several classes that involve partners so people just learn to get over themselves and move on. Hope this help. Good luck to you and thank you for your service :)
  4. I have applied to AU as well for fall '13 an waiting for the letter. I'm also waiting to hear back from Waubonsee or their ADN program as a back up and I was already accepted to chamberlain college of nursing for the summer semester ABSN
  5. Where are you located? Try chamberlain college of nursing. They have an open admission policy and I got in my first try. They are an accelerated BSN program so you'll be done in 3 years unless you have PRE reqs already done then it'll be less than that.
  6. I work at a hospital now as a medical assistant and I use a cheap one from a uniform store because doctors and other nurses do ask to use your stethoscope all te time and very rarely return it. I've been there 7 years and have gone through 5. I even tried a name tag on it, buying a pink one so the doctors don't want to use it and they still get taken. No one does it on purpose but when everyone's in their own world it just tends to get taken. I'm going into nursing school this summer and I plan I keeping my cheapo one just to save money. It's really up to you and how possessive you are with your things. There have been nurses who told the doctor NO but they usually didnt get treated well after that.
  7. Yay!!! See you at the orientation!!
  8. Thank you! Yes I have all my PRE reqs done so when I start in may I will be starting with the nursing classes. I'm so nervous and really worried! I hear all these horror stories from the nurses I work with and it terrifies me!
  9. Hello! Is there anyone who's already in the program that can give advice on any books or materials to get before for the first day that will help with getting prepared? Any tips on how to organize? All suggestions are appreciated! I start at the addison campus in may :)

  12. I'm so sorry for the delayed response! I'm not getting notifications and I've been studying for AP2 exams! Yes I think you'll def get in! I did a 89% on the HESI and I have a 3.7 as well! It was about a month before I heard anything however I didn't think I was supposed to hear back until 3/15 so it came earlier than I thought! I'm so nervous now that I know!
