Anti-vax nurses? Are you serious?

Nurses COVID

Published

We were discussing the Disneryland measles outbreak at work, and I was appalled to find some of my co-workers refuse to vaccinate their kids. They (grudgingly) receive the vaccines they need to remain employed, but doubt their safety/necessity for their kids.

I must say, I am absolutley stunned. How can one be a nurse and deny science?

As a nurse, you should darn well know what the scientific method entails and what phrases such as "evidence based" and "peer reviewed" mean.

I have to say, I have lost most of my respect for the nurses and mistrust their judgement; after all, if they deny science, on what premise are they basing their practices?

Twice in my short little career, I've met people who have gotten GB. One was totally random, no vaccination in recent history. The other, I just met yesterday. Trach/vent dependent due to paralysis of her diaphragm. (She had GB years ago and was a rare anomaly to have this permanent complication.) She had had vaccination right beforehand.

I'm genuinely curious - is there actually science linking GB with vaccination? Because it seems a rather random conclusion to me. If people get it without exposure to vaccine ingredients, why would it happen because of them?

Your chances of getting GBS from a vaccine are lower than your chances of getting struck by lightening. It's possible, but highly unlikely. GBS is much more commonly associated with previous infection with campylobacter jejuni...don't know why people aren't more concerned about this.

Nurses Who Vaccinate -

Just a lil humor to break the tension......

We recently had a measles scare in our office and also in our community . Cases are still pending test results but there are a few people self quarantine. These cases have scared our small community and our schools. All individuals who aren't vaccinated are asked not to attend school until these cases are either confirmed or found to be negative. Either way....I understand that people are afraid of what vaccinations can do but I think the alternative can be much more devastating.

But what anti-vaxxers don't want you know is that there is actually an even STRONGER link between GB and actual infection with influenza or an influenza-like illness. You are more likely to get GB if you actually get the flu than if you get the shot.

I don't think that they "don't want people to know" - I think it's that they truly don't understand.

It's like people who are anti-hormonal contraception, citing the huge risk of stroke, DVDs, etc. What they don't understand is the one thing that causes an even GREATER risk of stroke, DVDs, etc. is PREGNANCY.

Just so you understand, these links to sensationalistic websites are not data, or studies, or in any way scientific. They are merely someone's attempt at persuasion without any fact behind them.

By providing data what is meant is that you provide links to actual studies, peer reviewed, published in scientific journals. You can utilize your schools library to access many, or you can use google scholar (not the normal google search engine) to find many studies that are in the public domain. But to suggest that some silly website with rhetoric on it is science makes your argument seem like it has even less merit.

No I have provided good links. For instance, Vaccines ProCon.org. There is plenty of data there, but people here seem to gloss over any data I provide.

I think I'll stop taking my lithium and geodon to try an elimination diet; what could possibly go wrong?

You owe me a computer screen!

A lot of "publicity" doctors can say a lot of junk (ie, Dr. Oz) in the media. They live to get the attention. I can not find one research article published by this doctor in a professional medical journal (or ANY journal) on PubMed.

No I have provided good links.

No, you really haven't. Saying it over and over doesn't make it true. This kind of subterfuge might work with your lay relatives and friends, but it doesn't fly with educated professionals who understand that an essay is not "data."

OK . . . read it. Says "many scientists, including physicians, are also concerned about the safety and efficacy of many vaccines" without one name mentioned so credentials can be verified.

No, really that is not "good data", that is simply a website that collects postings from the general internet and aggregates it to make it easier for one to find BS for either side of a debate. Since the quality of the data coming in is very poor, the aggregation of data they present is also very poor.

Again, if you want to provide data find actual data, based on scientific principles, that has been published and reviewed by peers, and preferably has been duplicated by other researchers. Find that data, and bring it here. The rest of this is just opinion and of little to no value.

Well, gee . . . the National Vaccine Information Center is a nonprofit anti-vaccination advocacy group, not a research group.
