Anti-vax nurses? Are you serious?

Nurses COVID

Published

We were discussing the Disneryland measles outbreak at work, and I was appalled to find some of my co-workers refuse to vaccinate their kids. They (grudgingly) receive the vaccines they need to remain employed, but doubt their safety/necessity for their kids.

I must say, I am absolutley stunned. How can one be a nurse and deny science?

As a nurse, you should darn well know what the scientific method entails and what phrases such as "evidence based" and "peer reviewed" mean.

I have to say, I have lost most of my respect for the nurses and mistrust their judgement; after all, if they deny science, on what premise are they basing their practices?

Andi78, not one of those links is there anything but anecdotal evidence at best, and more often than not they are just outright lies.

How about trying to find from PubMed? Googling conspiracy theories on vaccines is hardly going to change a well educated health professional's mind on vaccines.

How can some of you be nurses with such little tolerance for others thoughts and beliefs?

How can you claim to be a nurse and deny everything that is taught in nursing school? My tolerance ends when someone purposely endangers others based on conspiracy theories that they fail to even try to justify with peer-reviewed scientific evidence.

I planned to stay out of this thread but I just can't anymore. There is nothing I can't stand more than people claiming fact by using opinion pieces. A few of the most recent links provided by andi state in their disclaimers that they are for "entertainment" and are "not intended to provide medical advice." And now I'm out because this is probably the most frustrating thread I've read here.

I'm genuinely curious - is there actually science linking GB with vaccination? Because it seems a rather random conclusion to me. If people get it without exposure to vaccine ingredients, why would it happen because of them?

There is indeed some evidence of a link between GB and vaccination. But what anti-vaxxers don't want you know is that there is actually an even STRONGER link between GB and actual infection with influenza or an influenza-like illness. You are more likely to get GB if you actually get the flu than if you get the shot.

I have provided lots of data throughout this. If you choose not to see the other side, you are willfully being ignorant. I don't see how anyone here can say I am when I have provided links. Just because I disagree, I guess that means you are right and I must be an ignorant fool. That's logical.

You have provided no "data." You have provided links to anti-vax web sites and opinion essays which contain no "data", not peer reviewed scientific journals. Not studies which have results which have been replicated numerous times by other studies which adhere to the scientific method and established protocols.

Just so you understand, these links to sensationalistic websites are not data, or studies, or in any way scientific. They are merely someone's attempt at persuasion without any fact behind them.

By providing data what is meant is that you provide links to actual studies, peer reviewed, published in scientific journals. You can utilize your schools library to access many, or you can use google scholar (not the normal google search engine) to find many studies that are in the public domain. But to suggest that some silly website with rhetoric on it is science makes your argument seem like it has even less merit.

Yeah...my gluten free diet was NoT curing my PTSD....what could I have done wrong???

Oh yeah, NOT TAKE MEDICINE.

Ok, that was my last comment....carry on brave souls!

LadyFree28, I have laughed from my belly today thanks to you; I am still baffled as to why a gluten-free diet can't cure PTSD though. :sour:

Have any of you read what the Cardiologist in Arizona had to say about his kids and the measles vaccine? He is not the only medical professional out there that feels that way.

Do you know it was a cardiologist who didn't know what to do when Michael Jackson was dying from a MI? (Sorry . . . couldn't resist)

Re wearing a face mask at work: Most masks at work are surgical masks. In order to protect yourself, respirators offer the best protection for workers who must "work closely (either in contact with or within 6 feet) with people who have influenza-like symptoms" (OSHA). These masks must be fitted to each person. This will cover you at work, but how about at the grocery store?

Personally, I don't care if someone gets vaccinated for influenza or not just as long as they stay home if they do indeed come down with the flu. (That's not saying I don't encourage all my pts to be vaccinated.)

Unfortunately someone infected with influenza is contagious before they show any symptoms.

I find that to be problematic.

EVEN scarier and most problematic, contracting measles when non-immune is about 90% when you are exposed. Sadly much of that exposure is accomplished by individuals NOT demonstrating any symptoms of disease, so HOW do we avoid it if herd immunity is dangerously compromised?
