Annoying female coworker conversations

Nurses Men

Published

Hey fellow men in nursing! I'm a student about to graduate nursing school this May and a hospital CNA of 5 years. I just want to stoke up some camaraderie about those annoying female conversations that we, as men and nurses, hear most frequently on our down time at school or work.

I particular colleague of mine in my clinical group, whom I like very much, talks INCESSANTLY about her boyfriends 3 year old girl who she plays mommy to because she does not have children. I'm constantly enlightened with what cute thing the child did this day or how she corrected the child for misbehaving. This fellow student is 27 y/o and is wanting to be married and start a family in the worst way.....I'm 22 and I'm not there yet....

I would never say anything rude to her about this, I just grin and nod.

Has anyone here experienced anything similar?

PS-don't even get me started on my OB/Peds rotation in school.... :p

So, for the past few weeks I've been looking for a replacement lockset for my 20 year old garage door. Got a good Schlage at Menards at a good price

Grade 1 on the deadbolt, Grade 2 on the handle lock...for $40!

Don't save a few bucks on a Grade 3... Not worth it at all.

Anybody want to swap lock installation stories? :woot:

Before I was married....let me say that my male neighbors would get lawn chairs and a six pack to watch the comedy of me cleaning my gutters. I learned to invite the wives, buy a keg, and offer food.

Now I leave it on the honey do list...;)

Maybe a woman's (lighter) touch, is what you require?? LOL

Menards is the place to shop! Whatever grade the deadbolt .. will not equal the ultimate home protection. Wanna trade Glock stories?

I had to Google that myself...:nailbiting:

As a female...I have NO IDEA!!!!

Why is it a thing? You decide.

  • They used to shave off all the pubic hair as a cure for syphillis, so the well-to-do used wigs.
  • Before penicillin was around to ease the lives of the promiscuous, these were used to cover up any sores prostitutes may have obtained in the line of duty.
  • They used to treat the syphilitic with mercury, which caused baldness.
  • The merkin is for women with no pubic hair. Some people just don't develop hair down there, and this can be embarrassing.
  • In days of old a common problem was lice. One of the ways people dealt with this was to shave all the hair off their bodies, including arms, legs, and pubes. Wigs became very popular. Pubic wigs caught on slowly, starting among the kinkier set, but eventually became halfway respectable.
  • A merkin is a crotch wig for both men and women and is usually worn on the outside. Have you ever seen a Scot in full regalia? That little fur "purse" in front is a merkin.
  • In a country of mainly dark haired people, a prostitute may wear a blond merkin to be unusual and therefore more desirable. (Got this from a dictionary of sex.)
  • One of the more recent uses is to allow exotic dancers to comply with local laws prohibiting full nudity. They wear what amounts to a flesh-colored panty with hair on the front, appearing to the patrons of the establishment to disrobe completely without actually doing so.
  • In a sci fi story by John Varley called something like "The Barbie Murders," a group of women gives up individuality (and sex) and undergoes surgery to become perfect nonsexual beings resembling Barbie dolls. This involves losing genitals, pubic hair, etc. One Barbie goes back to being a woman for a night, painting on nipples and using a merkin.

Thank you for that well researched data. Your source:http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/743/what-is-a-merkin

I KNOW what they are used for...past and present. I didn't know it was called a merkin. I have heard several colloquial slang terms but the official word has escaped my knowledge base until this thread...and I don't frequent strip joints....gotta love AN! learn something new everyday!!

As a female...I have NO IDEA!!!!
I meant for me personally...I couldn't imagine wearing a wig in the nether regions. Just not my cup of tea.

ps: the "fur purse" in front of a Scot's kilt is not a merkin but a sporran. Under the Kilt traditionally they are commando or..."going regimental" a "true Scotsman".

I also wouldn't call it a purse to a Scotsman.;)

Today I learned to never google a term found on AN in a public place.

Thank you, Google, for bringing up pictures as well as the definition. Thank you, random person sitting next to me for getting up and MOVING SEATS. Thank you, AN, for making me feel as awkward as heck.

FTR, as a female: mindless gossip/drivel agonizes me. So appreciate working with the menfolk because of this reason exactly.

Our statements were purely rhetorical and halfhearted but thank you for your verbose response.

I think that was a *tad* harsh. I'm just saying, when you hear about the same old thing multiple times a day, everyday, it gets a little old. Just looking for a light hearted conversation here, nothing more!

Thank you for your opinion!

I agree..a tad harsh. Is there any room to consider that maybe the gals need to give it a rest? Generically speaking, no one should just "suck it up" when someone OVER TALKS about a certain topic. If we are going to be "fair," the women should also respect that men enjoy silence, and then arrive at an agreement. Come on, "Nursing is the Women's domain, and they can do whatever they want?" Really? Certain "team members" of mine are so into talking about themselves and their kids that I have to talk loudly just to get some assistance with something. I DO have to leave the department briefly often just to give my ears and mind a rest. I am glad that women/men love their children so much. But I do wonder, why do these folks think that we are all just "waiting to hear about their kids?"

The "merkin" conversations are a welcome change when I hear them...lol! I do love some of the female specific talk that the females share out loud...at least we all get a laugh out of it...that's all I will say about that :-)

I think the OP has presented the content in a non offense manner.

I'm uncomfortable qualifying certain annoying conversations as being of "female coworkers."

Really? Do we need an evidence based study? There are certain traits/behaviors by women, and also certain specific to men. I can think of only a couple men over the YEARS I have worked with that display a mild form of this trait.
