Hello LPNs/Future LPNs.
Im getting reallllly bummed out. I got accepted into the LPN program for this July. I was stoked! :) my husband has been so supportive. But it's so crazy to see so much "bash" on LPNs and their knowledge. I've already had people say, "oh, it's just LPN school." Or "why not RN?" Or,"you're not going to find a job as an LPN." And,"LPNs are phasing out" talk. It's really discouraging as a LPN student. Especially since I'm soooo stoked for it. Why the hell do people have to rain on people's parades?!? BACK OFF!!!
I would love some LPN support. :) I know LPNs have A LOT more going for them. It's comforting to hear stories about LPN pride.

Congratulations! The only thing that matters is that you are going to LPN school, and your husband is supportive. So, that means you are both happy about this. Nobody else's opinion matters. People just love to bash other people. For some people, the only way they can make themselves look better, is to put someone else down. You will be a nurse someday, in what, about a year (?) and those "other people" will still be whatever they are now. If it isn't someone bashing LPN's, then they are bashing ADN's, Diploma nurses, Medical Assistants, you name it. Good luck, dear.
Oh, another thing. Lately I have been seeing more jobs for LPN's than for RN's.

As a fellow LPN i completely understand how you feel. I get bashed constantly. However yes LPNs are mainly being phased out of acute care due to the stream lining they are wanting. Plus sicker people need higher attention. However people who say LPNs are being completely phased out is most definitely not true and unsounded. In Maryland ADN is being phased out in acute care now. People may blame it on magnet status but to be honest to be magnet there is nothing included in the literature that supports only having high degree level nurses. It is only required that each nurses role be defined in policy. So yes we may be out of Acute care in that sense but ADNs are moving that way to now. The LPN though will most likely still have a place for a long time in other settings. There is no danger of us going away
"U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts LPN ranks will grow by 21% from 2008 to 2018. The bulk of this growth is post-acute care, where patients do not require the skilled assessment and complex critical thinking needed from RNs"

Congratulations!
Ignore them all I say. You have the support of the most important person in your life anyway, your husband. The rest of them can go....I'll let you complete that statement

^^ What they said.
Also, rest assured that if you were in an ADN program, some of those same people would say "Well, why not a BSN program?" and "You'll never get a job in a hospital with just an ADN" etc, etc.... people just like to be jerks.
Good luck in LPN school! You will never regret it. :)

Good for you! Hold your head high and learn all you can in school. As an LPN, you'll always have a job. I've been a happy and content LPN for 23 years and have always had my pick of jobs. You may not be able to work in an acute hospital, but that just means you don't have to be overworked, or give up your weekends/holidays, and kill yourself on 12 hr shifts. There are still jobs for LPNs everywhere: LTC, schools, corrections, clinics, private offices, etc. Welcome to LPN nursing!

I was doing a job one time and I had just finished nursing school (my Bachelor's--I now have my license as an RN). The person had asked me what kind of nursing my degree was for (he didn't know it was my Bachelor's) and I told him. His reply? RNs are nice, but LPNs are much better. It felt like a slap in the face. So, there you go. It's who you talk to--some people think RNs are better, others think LPNs are better.
Good luck!

Its funny, cause the only place I hear the negative stuff about the LPN's is on this forum! I work at a hospital, and they still hire LPN's.
I look at it this way...if LPN's were being "phased out", why would there still be so many programs out there to get your LPN? It wouldn't make much sense huh? SWM2009 is right, just don't worry about what other people say. Congrats on getting accepted!!!

I've been an LPN for 13 years and I've heard those same things. Just ignore it, I've always been able to find jobs. SEVERAL times I've had 3 offers at one time. They've been saying LPN's are beung phased out for years, hasn't happened yet. Congrats you should be stoked!

They have been phasing LPN's since the 1980's...however I will tell you if your goal is acute care the positions are sporadic throughout the country. Depending on where you live....LPN's are in LTC (long term care) and LTACH's (long term acute care).
Many Hospitals are not hiring grads period and are seeking BSN grads as a preference. There is no nursing shortage. California has about a 47% unemployment rate for new grads....even those with a BSN. So jobs are scarce overall.
LPN's are a vital link in the healthcare system....my advice is to not hear the naysayers. As President Bush told Matt Lower form the Today's show recently.....
