Hello LPNs/Future LPNs.
Im getting reallllly bummed out. I got accepted into the LPN program for this July. I was stoked! :) my husband has been so supportive. But it's so crazy to see so much "bash" on LPNs and their knowledge. I've already had people say, "oh, it's just LPN school." Or "why not RN?" Or,"you're not going to find a job as an LPN." And,"LPNs are phasing out" talk. It's really discouraging as a LPN student. Especially since I'm soooo stoked for it. Why the hell do people have to rain on people's parades?!? BACK OFF!!!
I would love some LPN support. :) I know LPNs have A LOT more going for them. It's comforting to hear stories about LPN pride.
First off, I'd like to say GOOD FOR YOU!!!! It is truly a blessing to be as motivated and determined as you are, as well as having your family's support.NOW, as far as the "Haters"- Leave them where they are! This is STILL the best job to have! I have been in the medical field for almost 30 years, and I wouldn't trade a day of the 12 hour shifts, stupid doctors, trifling staff, family members, ancillary staff, and the WHOLE LOT!!!! There isn't anything wrong with being an LPN, and I get tired of people belittling MY profession. I had to go to school and sit boards just like my counterpart, so really is the only difference(as far as I'm concerned) are the letters behind our name. I'm not bashing anyone, but I love being an LPN, and I won't let anyone tell me I'm any less of a nurse because I chose to be an LPN! Incidently, I have a bachelors degree in something other than nursing! Good luck to you, and keep in touch!!!
Thank you so much for the responses! It makes me A LOT more confident in the profession I chose. I just felt that a lot of students were using this as a "stepping stone" for their RN. I, on the other hand, had chosen LPN as a profession. To see REAL LPNs work as an LPN is great! I'm looking forward to it. :)
Hey,all I can say is that Ive been an lpn for a year now and all Ive heard since day one is "when are you getting your rn?"
You have to try and rise above all that. I'm a male nurse in a family that is dominated by policemen, football players, and military guys. They all said "nurse? Are you serious?"
Its not about the way they look at us. Its about what we want to DO. For me its always been taking care of others.
I love your perspective. Good for you! :)
I Started out as a LPN years ago i am 28 now i have my masters degree. I HAD THE SAME problem that you had. LPNS are not being phased out.such a misconception. There is too much of a nursing shortage. Ive said this as well too. I teach a RN/ADN program and I find that my LPN students are very smart and very successful. Now if you decide to go on to your RN thats your choice, but your an LPN and your still a nurse and still very much needed in nursing. Dont let others say why not "RN" Having your LPN IS A HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT! You should be very proud of yourself. Congratulations on being accepted and stay with it! Hang in there.

I transported a pt to PCU last week who said LPNs were " obsolete " and I had better get back to school or find a new job soon if my ER ever progressed to a trauma center. I've never come so close actually mouthing off to another nurse.. Not only was she demeaning my position but threatening my job security.
Then I was telling a fellow co-worker who had the highest opinion of herself as a BSN. I asked her about what she thought of ASN RNs and she raved about how great ASN RNs in our dept are. Then she sidetracked to say how it was an easier route than a BSN bc the ASNs take a different NCLEX-RN than the more in depth BSN NCLEX-RN. I started to argue that misconception of two different NCLEX-RNs but it fell on dead ears. She further went on to say how, while our hospital doesn't differentiate between ASN and BSN she went on to say other hospitals do, not only in pay but also in job duties such limited med administration and the level of acuity of patient would determine if an ASN or BSN took care of the pt. she began to use that "critical thinking" concept in every other sentence about how a BSN program teaches one to think like a nurse, rather than act like one and finally I tuned her out....
I didn't argue or say anything because while she is wrong on almost all of it, I have no doubt that one day it really may turn out as foretold by these .... These.... Ugh, I don't even know what to say.

You all should feel good about your accomplishments. I have NO IDEA where these newer nurses get the idea that a ADN has different duties and limited privileges and take different test...which is utter and complete bunk. A diploma grad from a RN school take the same exam as well.
Unbelievable. Why must we tear each other apart? Are most people so insecure that they must put others down to feel better......I just don't get it any more and it really makes me ANGRY. I learn a majority of me bedside smarts as a new grad from a very giving LPN..... Thank you Louise!!!!!!!!! I can never repay you.
Congratulations to all of us nurses, which is INCLUSIVE of LPN's (Licensed Practical NURSES) who dedicate our lives to the helping of others!!!!!!!!!
