Anatomy & Physiology Fall 2008

Published

Several had mentioned starting a study thread early so we could get prepared for our fall A&P class, so here goes. I have gathered several websites from both here and on my own, so wanted to post them early on so that we wouldn't have to search for them. Please feel free to add to them and also any advice or study tactics that seem to work for you.

Thankyou to Eveyone here at AllNurses who have provided so much information in one spot.

Ok, that's it for tonight....I have several others but hopefully this will keep everyone busy for a day or 2 :chuckle:yeah:I'm sure we all have diferent study habits and will need to find our own way there but I am hoping we can work together as a study team.

Maybe each day or two, someone could provide a study tip or an mneumonics for memorization for tissues or nerves, anything that is helping you learn. Or if you come accross somethin that you can't use, maybe someone else can.

 OFF to Bed for me

hey there, just found out i made a 93 on my 1st a&p test! i'm so excited!!! i worked so hard and it finally paid off!!!! good luck to everyone else!!! we can do this, everyone just keep up the good work!!! thanks for all the help and the prayers, their greatly appreciated!!!

now it's time to go out and celebrate, that is unless this hurricane decides to flood us here in nc! lol!

I just got home from my first mini-practical in lab... it was over the skull. 25 questions, and I only missed two! 92% - woohoo! That really makes me feel more comfortable with taking the extensive bone practical in two weeks.

I found another site that really helped me study the skull - here is the link: http://www.gwc.maricopa.edu/class/bio201/skull/antskul.htm

Specializes in none yet!.

I have my first lab test on Monday and lecture test on Weds. I am really nervous, mainly because I am coming straight into A&PI nearly a decade after my genetics degree, and am catching up on terminology I knew once, but am not so sure I know now! Have spent all today reading the first 5 chapters of Marieb which seems to have helped - things are definitely coming back to me and hopefully tomorrow I can get fully into the stuff I actually need for the exam!! I have studied already of course, but figured at this point it is advantageous to get my refresher in!

We are currently studying the integumentary system, having done a brief overview of anatomy and physiology as an intro (anatomical position, names of regions, tissues etc).

ok started yesterday. The wrench, my teacher is working on some grant and now I have different teacher that is not on rate my professor at all. But he seems fair. We alre skipping cells and chemistry and our first test is on the intro stuff, tissue, and integumentary on 9/27. We have 4 exams and 4 practicals. Practicals and exams are on the same days since we just meet on Saturdays.

The funniest thing is all of the external anatomical names I learned are different in my book, so I have to re learn them (instead of manual morifice, instead of plantar, planta ect)

During lab we dissected a fetal pig and I did the cutting. It was actually pretty fun touching the stomach, and ovaries and stuff. Anywho I have a lot of studying to do.

Good luck guys.

I am currently in Human Anatomy. The schools I am applying to generally want Anatomy & Physi seperate.

I am finding it so hard to study for Anatomy and get through all the material! I try to cover each chapter before lecture or I am lost. It takes so long for me to get through one chapter-- I literally can't in one day. I am beginning to think I'm not smart enough.

Does anyone have any good study tips on how to stay on top of the overwhelming amount of material?

Specializes in Psych.

Hey prenursing07, first off relax. Take a deep breath. Let me just start of by telling you that it is very doable. Don't ever think that you aren't smart enough... you lie to yourself long enough you start to believe it.

Firstly, see if you can get the number of 3 or 4 other classmates in your class who could be your support/help system when you need it. Ask them how they feel about the lecture too. You never know, sometimes you aren't the only person in the class who is also having problems keeping up. They might be able to lend you some helpful tips and strategies to handle that specific professor; maybe they have had that professor before and know what the professor is looking for when it comes time for quizzes and tests.

Nursing students usually have a helping heart and like to give each other help when needed, so I think that you should have no problem finding people who are willing to help you in the class.

Next thing you could do is look at your study habits. Try changing something's around if your current style of studying is not working for you. You know what they say, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is insanity. So try to switch some things up, it might be very refreshing for you.

None of this is going to come very easily; after all no one said it would be easy, they just said that it would be worth it. Good luck to you and keep us all informed. Many people on here are in the same boat as you and we're all rooting for you:up::up:

In solidarity...

Macizu.

you'r right, make a friend! This is key.

That person will be there to remind you when you have a test, a quiz, material to catch up and so on...it's the best support.

I had the A&P with lab all in one. I bought the text and lab but hardly used it unless for pictures. I'm a slow reader as well. Before my first exam, I was in the same tunnel like you, trying to read everything in the text. That took me a long time too. I could get through the chapter, but it I wouldn't understand what I just read. But that's ok, I learned to make time for the readings. After the first exam and seeing that although my Pr. had a lot of reading material and such, his handout slides were very good and detailed enough just like the book. I used them like my text. You have to do everything the first time around to kinda see how your instructors are. I realized that I could do well just by attending the class, paying attention, and then going over the slides.

I personally am a big fan of using highlighters and different colored pens. I use it everywhere! highlighting makes it stick in my head. try it. also, repeating the stuff over and over. most importantly, use your own body to make sense of things.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

You can totally do it!:wink2:

hey everyone!!! well yesterday i ended up finding a bag of bones at party city- it has all of them except the ribs and spine! hopefully this will help alot! their pretty detailed for the amount i paid for them, i was suprised!

prenursing07- i also have the same problem with the reading. i find it alot easier to break up the pages, i see how many there are in each chapter and then break it up into two days worth! there is no way you can read a chapter that has 30-40 pages and retain all the information!!!! i also try to have that chapter read before we go over it in lecture, that way if i still don't get it after reading and hearing it then that's when i know i need to sit down with the teacher and get one on one help! as for the studying- i go over the notes we took in class right after lecture, for some reason it sticks more that way! also my book offered a study guide that has tons of quizzes, tests, essays, labeling diagrams, ect! i also bought a coloring guide, didn't really think i would use it as much as i have but it breaks the chapters and concepts down, then has questions and stuff! i think if you look at the material in alot of different ways, you can retain the information alot better. just be diverse in how you study! i hope this helps!!!

Hi ORNurse2Be,

Firstly, congrats on a great grade for your 1st test! I know you worked hard to achieve it. Can you share your study tips more? Did you study every day or did you start reading right from the 1st day of your class? Did you start reading the book before or after your 1st class started? How long did you study for each day? I am a bit behind on my reading and have my 2nd lecture & 1st Lab Monday and I haven't even finished w/Chap. 1 yet!! I am determined to do well even w/a late start. I took A&P 19 yrs ago when I was in Dental Hygiene School and barely got a "C" then, so I am willing to do whatever it takes to get at least a B+ now. I am definitely going to get those bones you're all talking about. Do you think WalMart may have them? My Prof. announced she will have tutoring for 2hrs. every Thursday starting this week and I will definitely be going every week. I am so happy about that! I have a plan to study every day for 2-2+ hrs. during the week and possibly more on Sat & Sunday. I also have a great amount of work to do for my Religion class which is on Tues. so I have to balance my time. And, to really add to the fire I will be taking a Sociology Clep exam in 2+ wks so I'll need to fit that studying in also. I do work better under a tight schedule so I will get my act together starting this week for sure. I wish everyone all the best in A&P! Happy studying :D:D

Hi Msdeannah,

I hope all is well, my hat goes off to you for taking an all-day A&P class. I know you must be so tired by the time you leave. I give you tremendous amounts of credit. My lecture is 1-2:25pm Mon & Wed. and my Lab is Mon. evenings from 6-9pm so I have some time between lecture & lab to digest everything and listen to the taped lecture over & over. Unfortunately I'll be at school for 9 hours on Mondays but that's ok, I am ready for it. How's Chem? I sure don't miss the mole problems! You'll do great. Wishing you all the best and looking forward to reading your posts in the future! :D

hey gemini08, thanks i did work really hard for my grade! i'm still a little disappointed though, my college changed their grading scale a 93 used to be an a but now it's a b! gah only 1 point away! oh well i'm going to try to work really hard to bring it up to an a, plus our teacher drops our lowest test grade!!!

my studying is a bit crazy and obsessive! alot of ppl look at me like i'm crazy when i tell them how much i do to prepare for tests and stuff! well before the class started i already had read ch.1 so that i could get a head start! well everyday after lecture i would study the notes that i took in class, and then go over it in the book and add stuff to it that the teacher didn't mention. once i was done with that chapter i did the end of the chapter questions. i also bought this study guide book that was offered in the book store that goes with our book. i have the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology by martini/nath the 8th edition! can't remember off the top of my head the name of the study guide book, but i can give that to you tonight when i get home! anyway that has helped alot, it breaks the chapters down into concepts and then goes over each concept in detail. it gives you questions, fill-in the blanks, label diagrams, essays, ect! i also bought this coloring book, i actually use it more for the questions than the actual coloring. it has more in depth questions, like what would be on the test! i will also give you the name of that when i get home tonight if you are interested! but basically i try to have all of my reading done a week before the test! which works out to where i have them read before we go over it in lecture! then i have a whole week, the week before the test, to go over each chapter! mon i'll go over chapter 1, tues chapter 2, then wednesday ch 3, then thurs go over all of them, then fri is the test! as for the amount of time i study, i just go over the notes until i have them memorized and fully understand the material, if i still don't understand it that's when i go to the study guide and coloring book! if that doesn't work i then go to my teacher! but if i had to average it, i pretty much spend about 2-3 hrs a day, some days more if i have to read and study! wed and thurs before the test i studied from the time i woke up (about 9) til the time i went to bed (around 12)!!! don't get me wrong i do have days when i take a break, maybe read and that's it but i just don't want to fall behind! there's no way to cram all this information and be able to fully understand it! i'm sorry that you're behind, just sit down and plan out your day and see when you can squeeze in some extra time to sit down and read, even if it's only a few pages- it's better than nothing! that's what i have to do, i work alot of nights! like 3x this week i go to school from 10-11, then work from 1-9! so pretty much i have a 2 hr gap between school and work, then when i get home i try to do as much as i can! i hope i answered all of your questions, if not please feel free to ask! good luck with everything! nice talking to you!
