Hey all,
So I just got accepted into my local ADN program after three years!
Yesterday was orientation, and I was super excited. I seem to be the youngest in the class (23) and also a male (probably irrelevant info).
However, one of the instructors made it very clear to me that he was not very fond of me, I have no idea why. He was cool to everyone in the else in the class BUT me. My question is; Can a clinical instructor fail you just because they don't like you? I'm a very good student and will make sure I do everything as correctly as humanly possible, but my question still remains. Can he fail me based solely on the fact that he doesn't like me. (Keep In mind, I could care less if people "like" me, I just want to pass this program that I've invested so much time and money into getting into.
I could be just worrying too much and he could like me just as much as everyone else, but regardless I still would like to know.
Thank you for your time.

Why would he not like you. There's got to be more to the story. It's not usual for someone to say they don't like you without telling you why.

What did he do that gave you the impression that he didn't like you?
I wouldn't worry about this until it's an actual problem instead of a potential problem.

I agree with this advice. Don't worry yourself over this. It is completely possibly that you misread the instructor or maybe, to some degree, are projecting some worry about being part of a small minority(meaning you one of only a fee males in the class) onto him.
When semester begins go in, do your work, be where you're supposed to be and you should have zero issues. Good luck! You got this.

Yes, they can fail you just because they don't like you. They'd have to make up a reason, but that's not difficult to do.
Most will not fail a student they simply "don't like", though. That takes a lot of nerve. You'd have to be openly defiant or a genuine screw up to fail in 99.99999% of cases.

Oh my. Had the same situation 25 years ago.
How did you handle it, of you don't mind me asking. I'm assuming you're an RN currently, so you survived? lol
Thank you for the honest response. I appreciate it

You have just made a completely subjective statement. HOW did the instructor make you feel that way?

You need to do something REALLY unsafe in order to fail clinical. If your clinical instructor tries to fail you for no reason, you can always appeal and he will have to show some kind of proof that you did something unsafe.

You waited so long and now have the excitement of getting accepted and the jitters that come along with the first day of a new endeavor - any chance all of this has you a bit excitedly anxious/on-edge?
Really, unless he said something like "I hate all other male nurses" I can't imagine what he might have done to give you this impression. You've put this out there, now we're all curious to know what happened!
I think it best that you take it easy and don't even get started on second-guessing yourself every waking moment.
Congrats and enjoy nursing school!

What happened that made it clear to you that the instructor doesn't like you?
No, he can't fail you for not liking you. No school allows this. If he tries, you should file a grievance with the school.
But please don't assume that he will try.
I had an instructor who didn't like me and it was extremely unpleasant. She did not even succeed in giving me a formal warning, although she tried.
Be the best you can be. Do your best to be respectful, despite your feelings. Not everyone has to like you and you don't have to like everyone else. You can have a professional relationship with someone you dislike.
Consider this a learning experience and you will thrive.
