Am I over thinking this? Opinions appreciated.

Nursing Students General Students

Hey all,

So I just got accepted into my local ADN program after three years!

Yesterday was orientation, and I was super excited. I seem to be the youngest in the class (23) and also a male (probably irrelevant info).

However, one of the instructors made it very clear to me that he was not very fond of me, I have no idea why. He was cool to everyone in the else in the class BUT me. My question is; Can a clinical instructor fail you just because they don't like you? I'm a very good student and will make sure I do everything as correctly as humanly possible, but my question still remains. Can he fail me based solely on the fact that he doesn't like me. (Keep In mind, I could care less if people "like" me, I just want to pass this program that I've invested so much time and money into getting into.

I could be just worrying too much and he could like me just as much as everyone else, but regardless I still would like to know.

Thank you for your time.

Meh, I had an instructor who clearly hated me in nursing school. She was trying to push her holistic healing agenda on us to advertise her supplement store. I made it clear I was big into science backed practices. I did fine in her class because I knew the material. She ended up getting fired. Probably because she was using the school as a venue to sell her snake (and fish) oil.

Clearly speaking as a 23 year old. How do you know he does not like you? It has only been one single orientation, so making such conclusions is immature. I'd say do your best in terms of academics and professionalism and see what your professor's reactions are. if he/she does indeed show visible/substantiated dislike for you in words and/or actions, document such instances and, of course, contact the higher powers. No professor can ever fail a student simply because he/she dislikes a student.

You will have personality conflicts with instructors and with co-workers in your future, You need to figure out how to get along. I had an instructor that I had a personality conflict with (not dislike, just very different styles - is this perhaps what you are feeling?) and I got through her class by just doing my best. I have also had co-workers in my career that I had personality conflicts with (one who I dearly loved outside work but absolutely HATED working with.) You adjust and get along.

I agree with the advice saying not to worry about it until it's an apparent problem. You'll do fine, it could be that you're the only guy and he's used to girls. Who knows.

P.S. Remember, you're going to be a NURSE not a "MURSE", own it! Like my instructors told me, there's no such thing as "murses". We don't call female physicians Foctors, there's only Nurses and Doctors. Good luck!

What made you feel like he didn't like you? It's probably in your head. I wouldn't worry about it until it becomes a problem like others have said. I do think a clinical instructor can fail you if they want to. They will find a way if that's what they really want. So, if you really think this person doesn't like you then just kill them with kindness. Smile, listen to anything they have to say and don't ever talk back.

I did. Now a nurse of 24 years lol. I just made sure I did everything right so the jerk couldn't influence my outcome. You can too.

I couldn't agree more! Also- be super prepared for clinical and a little butt kissing never hurts. After all, this is nursing school- pass any way you can!
