Im a nursing I student just finishing up the semester. I DREAD going to clinical. Absolutely hate it. Our student teacher ratio is10:1, and have not lost any students in that area. Meanwhile other groups are down to 4:1. I find it disorganized and hectic, and we were given little direction. When we could find the instructor (she was very nice) she was too busy w/ other students concentrating on passing meds. The first day at the nursing home we were told to give a.m. care...huh? what was that Im glad I wasnt the only one who didnt know what that was (example of the disorganization). Why are we (the last week of school) learning how to do an assessment..I guess I have to just suck it up. Other then that, I love lectures, and the material but this clinical thing stinks !

Wow. Maybe it's because I was a CNA for a while that I know what AM care is, but what did you think it was?
My clinicals are pretty hectic too, but I don't hate them.
Believe me, if you think they are disorganized, wait till you get out of school.

Hang in there! I too HATE clinicals.. Although my school is not as disorganized as yours.. a.m. care was one of the first things that we learned. But clinicals are nerve wrecking.. I never feel as though I'm doing anything right. And my clinical instructor has a habbit of talking to me like I'm an idiot. And I try so hard to not let it get the best of me but it does, when I get home, not in front of my instructor.. I'm not going to give her the satisfaction of seeing me upset. (Can you tell I had a bad day at clinical today???)

I will be finish my first semester on Friday the 15th; I love going to clinicals. I guess you could say I'm a hands on type of person, and couple that with the fact that I have been a cna for 10 years now.

Ummm..I have NEVER set foot in a hospital before our clinicals. So no, I did not know what a.m. care was, exactly what it entailed and specifically what needed to be done. And I wasnt the only one in the dark.

I have one semester left of the R.N. program & unfortunately I have hated every single med/surg clinical thus far!!!! This semester we were on a busy medical floor & 8 of us had 2-3 pt.'s each w/ one instructor....yeh, THAT was interesting!!!! Even though I don't like clinical, I still manage to do well in it... somehow???
Anyway, I liked my psych clinical alot, so I'm going to try that route when I'm done. Thank goodness there are many fields of nursing to try & find your niche.

Im framing this and putting it on my wall while I study Your comment was GREAT!!!
:thankya:Thank you
put this funky-looking thing in my ears (just like the one I had when I was a kid) and listened to some funny noises in a couple different places:smiley_aa ...& in a couple hours, I get to cut up somebody's meat and make small talk with them while they eat (just like when I used to babysit!)...and just before bedtime, I get to look at a list of pills, pop them out of their package....all by myself:yelclap: ...put them in somebody's hand & watch them swallow them!
Totally awesome...Ummm..I get paid WHAT to do that....

Thanks....I had a horrible time with a test on Monday, and had received a clinical evaluation just before that mentioned some shortcomings I had....I SWEAR when I read the original post here that it was someone in clinicals with us....one of the other students in my group talked me down a bit from my frustration by saying we all felt that way, but it's hard to know when someone's being kind or not....I spent the semester feeling like an idiot and like I was "pretending"....I listen to a couple of heart/lung sounds on tape and on the internet and suddenly I'm a specialist and should be able to discern every noise I hear in a chest? Or what sounds like LACK of a noise?!?! And when I ask for help or confirmation, I get the stink-eye like I'm the stupidest student she's ever had....I've thought several times of quitting....but figure after giving up a well-paying job and the time and money it's taken me to get this far, I owe it to myself (and maybe future patients) to give this another semester...but it's not easy....
Good luck all!
