Nurses General Nursing

I have loved this site, but as I check , "Today's Posts", as is my wont, more and more, there are only student related topics.

What has happened here? Has anyone else noticed this? I have no problem with lots of students here, but I also want to participate in lively discussions with peers!

I was very active for several years but burned out for various reasons. I took a long hiatus but then came back though found my old user name to have been locked out so I decided to come back under a new name.

I agree that it is hard to find threads that are worth reading because they're just the same old stuff over and over.

The formula lately I have seen is 1) pre-nursing student wants to go straight for NP or CRNA, 2) nurse asks for advice or opinions, they are genuinely given, sit back and watch the fur fly. Rinse, repeat.

I seldom view this site because I am mostly interested in critical care nursing topics, of which are few and far between. I enjoy learning, and am not currently in a hospital that does much teaching or inservices worth attending. All I see are the NP posts, the student posts, etc., like other's have said. I check the critical care sections, but rarely see anything that appeals to me.

I've been a member since 2005, and it's definitely gone through changes/cycles/ebbs/flows. I started off as a paramedic and pre-nursing student here, so I have definitely reaped the benefits of the collective wisdom as I have "grown up" in my career and gone from civilian to military to civilian again. I really enjoy the specialty forums and as my career shifts, so do my visits to various areas. I love it. It's really what we make it, and I know sometimes it seems like we are a minority swimming in a sea of students ... but they won't be students forever. :)

I think it wouldn't be so bad if posters would utilize the appropriate forums. The number of posters, especially the brand new ones, who just put every single post in general nursing without bothering to look around for a more suitable forum is astounding.

Tip of the day: it is possible to go and mark all of the student forums as read, and then use the what's new to see what else is new. You can also do that with any other forums you don't want to see come up on the what's new list. Takes a minute or two, depending on what you're marking as read, but it does clean up the "What's New" list fairly well.

Notwithstanding that the good idea continues to be making the student section a separate site, "Mark Read" does not appear as an option on my screen.

Go into settings and make sure mark all read option is checked. Then it should show up.

Once upon a time, long ago, and far away, new nurses and future nurses actually respected and listened to experience. Those days are gone. It's all about ageism and bashing old nurses for even having an opinion on the threads where they ask for----opinions. Times have changed. Everyone wants to shoot straight to the top and experience or wisdom be damned. I worry for the future of advanced practice. It's going to lack experience, wisdom and maturity. Makes me really worry for primary care in the near future. I will stick with my "old" PA and MD. At least they have experience and time and know more than book and school knowledge. As these guys retire, I will have to worry that the practitioner will even know what they are doing. Questions will be asked. If there is no real nursing experience, I will move on to another NP or PA ( with some actual medical experience) who have them. Sad.

A lot of the nurses that had those lively discussions posted with the app from their phone. Once the app disappeared so did a heck of a lot of people.

This exactly.

I have an idea, guys... like the what I learned this week thread (which was amazing, it's a shame that sort of went away). How about every single one of you take a minute, think about the most recent new thing you learned/saw/did, and consider writing an article about it?

I've never written an article before, but I promise I'll work on trying to come up with one this week if some of you guys promise me the same. :)

We all work in dramatically different environments, even if some of us work on the same type of unit. We all have different physicians, who have preferences for different drugs/techniques/etc. I bet each of us has a ton of interesting, specialized knowledge.

For one of my classes in school right now, I had to come up with an environmental chemistry-related topic for a research paper... and what I came up with was antibiotics in the water system contributing to the prevalence of MDRO bacteria. I had to put a healthcare spin on it. xD When I actually write the paper (it's due next week and I haven't started!!!), would anyone be interested in reading if I submitted it as an article?

Nah, not if you don't wanna work bedside. Does it REALLY matter what side the liver's on? It's not like I'm working hepatic nursing...

I had an A&P classmate wonder why she hadn't gotten into the nursing program, wondering how important could microbiology really be to a nursing education.

To Calivianya - Could not agree more! I'll come up with a decent post and/or article this week about...whatever comes up at work tonight. There's always material.

I like the idea of a 'what I learned this week' thread! What happened to it? Let's start new ones in each subsection so people can keep track of what others are learning in CICU vs. LTAC vs. school nursing. I'll take point in the CCU/Cardiac/Coronary Care/Telemetry section if no one else has done it in 14h when I get home from work.

Props to Calivianya for the solution that I LOVE. Also I am definitely interested in your paper. Sounds like awesome material for an article I'd actually like to read!

Let's keep this going, guys. What do you want to see more of, and how do you plan to make it come about? Do you need help from the community on anything? Can you offer help?

My issue is when I post things in more specific forums, like CCU forum, I get less answers, which makes me more inclined to post under general nursing to attempt to get replies. How many individual forums do you all check daily?
