AHS Cost Cutting and Fee Increases

Published

Well, now that management is having their expenses accounts monitored, it's time to go for the rank and file.

Part timers are now to be charged for their parking when they are not working! Yup, the parking memo for the Edmonton Zone clearly states that part timers will be charged for parking on their vacation and sick days. Basically any day that you are paid for you will be charged for parking.

Positions are being quietly "frozen" to be filled with displaced staff from the closed Transitional Care Units at RAH. Rumour are rife that RNs may be laid off to accommodate displaced senior staff.

Good times ahead, people.

The job market is terrible. I wanted to leave my job months ago, but I will be staying a few months longer than I'd like, saving in the process for the time off I'm taking. I heard that transitional unit might stay open longer because there is no where to place the patients. But if it does close, some RNs might be laid off for sure. And paying for parking on vacation days? Wow.

I'm guessing this is also the reason that only one UNE position has been posted at the RAH? (And very few UNE positions at all, actually).

Hopefully this won't get as bad as the hiring freeze a few years ago :(

It's going to depend on the budget that comes out this Spring, but I wouldn't expect to see many UNE positions posted anywhere this year. AHS is refusing to hire contract nurses, OT has been cut everywhere and they are still cutting. Regardless, I'm moving on this year. The worst part is, when you tell people, they don't believe it. "But there's a nursing shortage!" Yes, but the government does not want to pay for healthcare.

I hate budget time.. Nurses always seem to get screwed.. Its a bad time right now everywhere..

The higher ups are not replacing sick calls. Worked with a Skelton crew all weekend. The worse is staffing doesn't want to get yelled at so there lying about trying to cover the shift. It's like they think we're idiots.

I was hopeful that this mess would improve by now. Instead, it gets better for a time, then it gets worse. I'm at a loss for the next step. I'm sick of working rural, in the process of saving to make the move to a city. But now, I'll be giving up a full time job for casual or part time, and most of the floors will remain understaffed. The same practise of not replacing staff was happening in 2008-2010. So I'm trading off one problem for another.

Joanna - one of the reasons i am staying where i am is because at least i have a ft job and benefits and not ready to give that up to go south right now.. Plus i like northern rural nursing so its not a hardship..

Working with skeleton crews is crappy.. Its bad enough when u can't find staff but to not replace due to budget is ridiculous

Working rural is starting to make me depressed. So although it's not an ideal time for me to leave, I am leaving. We are all so overworked because there is never enough staff, and that's not the life I want anymore. I'm very glad I came, but I can't see working a Northern post ever again. It's just not for me, for various reasons.

AHS needs a huge audit at every level so they know where exactly their money is going.

I'm staying put where I am with no raise in the foreseeable future. I've had no response to any jobs I've applied to with AHS.
