Hello I was wondering to myself whats the average age that graduates are coming out of nursing school these days?! Im 23 going on 24 in december and this is my first year of Nursing school! I hear from alot of my peers that the Nurses are starting off at a later age than expected because of how hard it is to get in nursing school as well as finishing all prerequsites!:nurse:

Specializes in Respiratory, Med/Surg.

I was 22 when I graduated.

Specializes in PICU/NICU/ER.

I'll be 37 when I graduate. After 11 years working in a hospital laboratory, as a Supervisor, I quit and went back to school.

I'll be 22 when I graduate in May 2012

Will be 24 when I graduate. If I didn't move to another city, I would actually be an RN now.

Specializes in Emergency Dept. Trauma. Pediatrics.

I will be 31 when I graduate. I started Pre Reqs though back in 04 so at 24, got on the wait list in 2006, was on the wait list for 3.5 years, started in 09 and will graduate in May.

Specializes in Operating Room.

Started prereqs at 17, applied to nursing school at 18, started program at 19, will graduate in Dec 2011 at 21. I want to go to grad school after working a couple of years, but it worries me being an NP (for example) at 25, 26 years old. Some might not take me seriously.... am I the only one that feels this way? Is there ageism in nursing for the young foks?

Specializes in Telemetry.

I decided I wanted to become a nurse and started prerequisites at 20.. I just started my BSN program and I'm 22. I will be 24 when I graduate. My class has 65 students, and I think over half of my classmates are older than me.

Started my prereqs at 38 yrs-old, applied and got into my BS program at 40 (well started the academic year at 39), and will graduate 3 years later, this June at 42 yrs-old.

I have 54 in my cohort, and while there are a couple traditional college age students.....I'd say most are closer to my age then to college age, and I'm by no means the eldest in the group.

Specializes in Geriatrics.

I'll be 25 when I graduate from my LPN program. Most likely going for my RN after.. :)

I'll be 21 when I graduate nursing school (we start NS our sophomore year plus I am young for my class so thats why 21) I hope to go back for my NP either immediatley and work PT or atleast go back within 2 years so depending on whether I go for MSN or DNP I'll be done with that sometime in the age range of 24 - 27.

I must say with my program we have only one "adult" completing the pre-reqs right now that I know of. I can only imagine the struggles she goes through because some of her classmates are her daughters age.

I wish the best of luck to all the 2nd, 3rd, or maybe even 4th careerers out there!

Actually, at least for me, it isn't bad being in school with people half my age (I'm 40.) I actually hang out with a group of friends who are 21, 22, 26, and 40 as well. And we hang out socially, not just at school. I love being around younger people (as long as they are mature), maybe because I don't have kids and I don't really want to "act my age." :clown: We all have a great time and it honestly doesn't feel as if there is an age gap at all. They're mature for their age, and I am immature for my age so we just meet in the middle. :D

I graduated Sept 2010 at the age of 40. In my class of 20 (we started with 30) there were about 4 in the 40+ group and handful of 30 somethings and the bulk being 20-29. I enjoyed being around the younger students as well because so many were crossing bridges I crossed long ago..marriages, first children being born, first car, first time away from home. It reminded me of my times doing the same and I both envied and rejoiced in their accomplishments. Regardless of age the actual task of nursing school was the one thing we all had in common that bound us together and age did not seem relevant to that task, just the desire to become nurses.
