This thread is here for those recently accepted into the Army Nurse Corp to discuss questions, concerns, cross-talk, give advice, to have mentors from those who are 'in the know', discuss PT, job expectations, questions on uniforms / duty stations / contract / bonuses and in general to begin your journey together.

Here are the updates from the Human Resources website. For those of us with M5, the lowest rank listed on the slots was CPT. The reason for this may be that by the time typical new accessions complete NTP, and attend the courses that they were guaranteed, they are CPT's or 1LT(P)'s. I do not know how we will be assigned, or if we can be placed in a slot more than 1 rank below the grade that is posted even if we have the credentials for the spot. We may be treated as new accessions and placed in general 66H slots for the first year, and we may also have to complete the NTP along with all of the other New Grads. I am just not sure. If any one finds out any info on this can you keep us posted.

I was requesting all MEDCEN's also...but if they're not availabl :(. Since you posted this I did ask about another location....Is it too late to change our minds on our choices since my every one was MEDCEN?! Does anyone know how early we find out about where we're stationed? Do we find out before, during or after OBLC?!!! Just wondering since time is so short for all we have to accomplish now! :)

I'll try to get the name of the MAJ I spoke to at BOLC, but no, we do not have to do the NTP according to her. I spoke to her out at Camp Bullis one night about my packet and what I should expect if I was selected and she stated that since I had BOLC under my belt, my M5, and obviously experience I should expect to hear from my career counselor to talk about what I wanted out of my career in the Army and then orders would be cut. She thought it would be pretty cut and dry. But we all know, believe it when it actually happens!!! She also told me that the jobs posted on HRC are not necessarily the only options available. That is also possibly negotiable, but to be determined when that time comes around. She said that the AN Corps has to worry about retention as well! Let's just hope that's true as well!! All I know is I can't wait until I'm in uniform permanently!!!:lol2:

Are you buying supplies already? I don't even know what to buy yet....

So I talked to my recruiter today to be sure I was not behind on things, because I have not signed anything yet, and had no idea what was going on. I was told that I could not be commissioned until the scrolls were signed. She said everything was not official with the approval process until congress gives us a blessing and sends those documents back.

All papers signed & completed today. Just waiting until next week sometime to find out what the heck I'm doing next!

I'm thinking about the July BOLC. I know that sounds crazy -- July in Texas! -- but the idea of getting everything done that needs doing before March is giving me palpitations. Haha.

Yeah, HOT is exactly what I was thinking about July, ha ha. I have family in TX & I do nooootttt enjoy that Summer by any means! See, I was totally freaking about January, but if I know March is coming I can mentally prepare myself for that one ahead of time (well, "enough"....as I'm sure freaking out will still be an issue, lol). & I guess after training & our assignment, we'll have something like 21 days to get everything together back at home? That's what I'm told....

Let me just tell you guys from experience...don't over think it. No matter how many lists you make and how many times you go over it before you leave you'll never feel prepared. But once you get there you'll realize, wow, I was well prepared!! And BOLC in July...heck no! That means FTX in August. There are showers out there now, but only once during the week. So for the other days that you will be doing PT (yes, PT in the field) and the other training out in the blazing sun you are going to be hot, sticky, wet, miserable, etc. There are a lot of heat injuries during that time, so just be careful about choosing to put yourself into such conditions. I'm sure all of you will do fine, but if given the opportunity to pick hot, blazing hot, and unbearable hot...just sayin'!!! If any of you need help with what to pack, what can wait 'til you get there, and how to pack smartly for the field, just let me know. I did some things that I did when I was prior service in the field that had heads turning looking at me like I was crazy until they realized that it was a comfort thing (showering in your tent secrets)!! :lol2:;)

It's not a matter of lists or preparation -- there are things (personal) I need to accomplish and have in place before I go anywhere, and March is cutting it too close for me. If I can survive BOLC in the summer, I know I can do just about anything. LOL

You're funny!!! With your sleeping bag liner/poncho liner either get a cot in the corner or make sure you're next to a good battle buddy so that you can share the space. There should be strings on your liner that you can tether to the tent to make an area where you can bird bath in privacy. Some people are not shy and just hang it all out there, which is fine for them, but I like some privacy when I'm washing my essentials!! If you're a lite packer then try to take a basin with you, but if you're like me and want to make sure you have extras, then the big zip lock bags will suffice. I washed my hair every night with the big zip bags. You have to go beside the tent, but it works. If you have short hair, you could get away with washing your hair at the sink, but it's highly frowned upon because that water is a limited supply. I used the medium size zip lock bags to wash the rest of me. When I was finished with my upper part I soaked my feet in them and washed them really good. TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET!!! Don't sleep in socks, let them air out. Your feet and legs are going to swell, so this gives you a chance to massage them. Get a good facial cleaner that doesn't require rinsing so that if you have to get up quick and can't make it to the sinks you can at least wash your face. Next tid bit is for girls only, obviously!!! Get the summers eve feminine wipes that are individually packed so that you can carry them in your pockets/assault pack. If you're there during the summer then panty liners and some feminine powder would be a good thing. It was "hot" during the day and it helped alot of us stay dry! Sandwich bags for stuff like that to put in your pockets is a good idea. I also had my phone in a zip lock bag to protect it from the dirt and moisture. I've seen this on other sites, so I'm just going to reiterate it, bring plenty of drink powders. The water is HORRID!!! So mixing in one or two of these makes it much more palatable! I also took one of the large gatorade bottles at the beginning to keep in my assault pack so that I had something good to drink every once and a while during the week. Take money to the field because Mama Snacks comes out to the training sites and you can literally get some of the best chicken tacos and quesadillas as well as anything else you could possibly think of!!! She's a lifesaver from the 3500 calorie MREs...EACH!!! Take snacks to carry in your assault pack. Try to pack lite, but also pack as if you won't be back in your tent until the duty day is over. When you're at the ranges and doing your lane trainings there is a lot of down time, so study material and snacks are essential. Sunscreen and chap stik with sunscreen is important too. Not only is the sun bad, but the wind can be just as harsh on your lips. Bug spray wasn't that big of an issue for me, but some people were obsessed. Another essential....FEBREEZE!!! Sounds silly, but I'm not one that enjoys my stuff stinking. I sprayed it on my ACUs at night when I hung them up and my sleeping back before I rolled it up in the morning.

That's all I can think of right now...especially since I have a 3 year old trying to type with me!!! Hope it helped a little!

@New1lt although im not in yet, i really enjoyed reading ur post :) i will defntly copy n paste this for future reference...goodluck to all of you....
