This thread is here for those recently accepted into the Army Nurse Corp to discuss questions, concerns, cross-talk, give advice, to have mentors from those who are 'in the know', discuss PT, job expectations, questions on uniforms / duty stations / contract / bonuses and in general to begin your journey together.
So I am just going to sign my contracts tomorrow, after being assured that the only thing I needed was a Letter of Intent. She had told me before that I could be commissioned 72 hours before I reported to Ft. Sam, now she says that I can not happen until after I get there.
I am not sure I believe this, as she has given me reason to question the things that she has told me in the past. She has gotten things mixed up, I have had to sign the same things twice for corrections/errors.
The reason that I was concerned is I wanted my family to be able to see me get commissioned, as I know that they will probably not be able to see the subsequent promotions. Even if it is just a ceremony, and I have to do it again at Ft. Sam that is cool, but now she is telling me that can not happen. Does anyone know if this is true?
This makes me
Trauma - No they can do a ceremony.. even if it is was a 'show' for the family. I would definitely advocate for this.. if you are able to call in and talk to the station NCOIC and just explain it should be a VERY common ordeal. They will already have the room with flags, podium etc setup. Most recruiting stations offer this w/o you having to ask... this is likely just a communication error but something you should do and is EASY to do.

When I signed things a few weeks ago, my recruiter said he thought they had changed the rules to commissioning anywhere after 72 hours before going to Ft Sam also, but he was going to check into it.
I agree, they should have it available for parents/family to view beforehand, because afterwards it's such a whirlwind & they don't get any time with us to enjoy it & that's not very fair to them.
Has anyone heard/received orders yet? I need to sign another contract to stay at my current travel assignment. The contract would take me through March into April and I am concerned of the legal ramifications if I get orders for BOLC in march. Comments, thoughts, opinions?....can there even be legal issues if these are government orders? I know if I wanted to end my contract myself I can be fined but unsure if I can be if I have the DOD to blame.
Care & Joy: check your FB inbox I sent you a message.
Lunah: I think I am going to be there with you:)
So I did some emailing, and calling and I have found out a few things.
1. There are PLENTY of open seats in the 29 March and 13 July classes of OBC. So don't worry about the classes being full. I think the capacity was 300+ and there were less than 50 in the first class, and 0 assigned as of yesterday at 1000.
2. If you are have M5 or 8A identifier send an EMAIL to the Branch Manager MAJ Richardson. She will email you back pretty quickly, and let you know what she has available. My list was super short, Ft. Benning, Ft. Bliss, Ft. Hood, and Tripler. I chose Ft. Benning, and asked about Ft. Bragg, and was told that Ft. Benning could be supported at this time. Of course all of this stuff is subject to the needs of the Army, and can change. We should look for orders 45-60 days prior to the date of report so that means sometime 1-15 February to keep your eyes open for them.
3. If you are a M/S generalist (66H) MAJ Villacorta is TDY until 14 Jan, so if you call her or email her, then you will not get a reply.
I am super excited!! :yeah:The other choices that MAJ Richardson gave me were Ft. Hood, Ft. Bliss, and Tripler.

Anyway I know not much has changed and I kept a blog of my 9 weeks there...check it out if you want.
OBLC 2009
I found your blog about 6 mo before I left for BOLC (Nov '10). It was insightful and made me feel a little more relaxed before I left. I work with two docs (both were prior Special Forces) that kept harassing me about how easy it was, but seeing their background I didn't believe them. But after reading your blog I realized that it was going to be much easier than my enlisted basic. Did you choose Ft. Riley or did they send you there regardless of your wishes? Just curious at how assignments go once you're in. Thanks again for blogging about BOLC!! Good luck on your new duty station!
