This thread is here for those recently accepted into the Army Nurse Corp to discuss questions, concerns, cross-talk, give advice, to have mentors from those who are 'in the know', discuss PT, job expectations, questions on uniforms / duty stations / contract / bonuses and in general to begin your journey together.
Assignments/class dates...apparently there is like only one person that handles class dates and assignments for new accessions and she is VERY busy. Also she is "suppose" to call EACH one of us to ask about our preferences, our generic course gaurantee (if you took one) and anything else that may be essential to our placement. So if you get a 502 area code calling you make sure you pick up because once you miss that call you will be playing phone tag. I make sure i carry my phone with me at all times anticipating a possible phone call. Since my husband is currently in the army and we will be a dual military couple i want to ensure nothing is screwy with our assignment and we aren't across the country from each other.
So I signed a "letter of intent" yesterday that my recruiter sent. Is that the only thing that you all signed or was there more. I am already in the Reserve, and I have an active clearance, so I don't think I need some of the security documents. I'm having trouble communicating with my recruiter. I'm trying to make sure I don't miss anything.
Planning on going to clothing & sales with my recruiter in the next couple of months to get all my uniforms squared away ... she says I will wear extra small, extra short. Haha! Need to scrounge up about $1K to get all outfitted, but she did say that at some point we'll get a one-time $600 reimbursement. I am also now below my weight limit. Yay! That took some work, and I need to make sure I keep it up ... or down. Whatever!
Congrats Lunah! I started off by spending about $1500 on uniforms. I had a couple redundant items, but I'm sure I'll use them. I did end up spending more as I figured out what I really wanted/needed. I would get the minimum of ABU's (or whatever the Army calls BDU's now) that is required. And invest in undershirts, good sports bras, good socks, and fabreeze!!! I had 3 uniforms during training when they required 2. I never had all 3 dirty at the same time and could have done with 2.
Keep running. I keep telling myself to keep moving too. lol
Lunah:
I would recommend having all 4 ACU's, that way you can 2 sets identified as field uniforms, and 2 sets identified as garrison uniforms. Sometimes the field dirt, (especially red clay) does not always come completely out, no matter how well you wash. Having the 2 that you keep for garrison will ensure that you always appear neat and tidy. I would also have 2 pair boots for the same reasons. Be sure that one pair is extra comfy for road march, etc. That is a bad time to find out that your boots rub. I would invest in a pair of the boots first, and start wearing them now to get them broken in, and to get your feet accustomed to being in them. Tenderfoot is not a good nickname to have:p
I do have a couple of other questions for everyone else:
Are they still administering the oath of office and putting you in the reserve until you go to school?
Has anyone been told by their Recruiter when you can get an ID card?
Is there anyone else that is coming out of the Reserve as enlisted, and going to active duty? If so, has anyone said when you are authorized to wear the officer rank?
I have been hearing a lot of different things from different people, and I would like to have a good idea of the answers before I talk to my recruiter.
SN: I am more anxious now that the results are back than when I was waiting:eek:
Last week I called the Maj. who is in charge of new accessions, and I am in her system but perhaps not scrolled yet ... waiting to hear from the other person she gave me as a POC as to when I'll be ready for orders. I won't make the January BOLC (thank goodness!), but March is still a possibility.
How is everyone else doing? Any news/progress? Hope you all had a great holiday! :)
I have been calling my recruiter for 2 weeks now with no answer. The recruiter that assisted me signing my contract 2 states over, because I am on a travel assignment, has talked to me more than he has. I am getting a little antsy. I need to keep working but I am worried about signing another contract and the legal ramifications that would be involved with breaking it due to orders. It would just be nice to know. Also my husband would like to know his orders too since they will change due to me. UGH....dont like not knowing where I will be calling home by the end of the year! Well i sort of do that now but...it's just different.
Hi everyone,
I am a 2LT (almost a 1LT!) and I went to BOLC or OBLC whatever you want to call it October 2009. It was a great time of year to go weather wise! Anyway I know not much has changed and I kept a blog of my 9 weeks there...check it out if you want.
Also I do know that if you are a brand new nurse right out of nursing school you can ONLY go to a large MEDCEN. I got to Walter Reed in DC in December 2009 and am set to PCS to Ft. Riley in April 2011. I am PCSing early because of the whole merge with the Navy hospital thing here.
I work on an oncology unit here at Walter Reed but I have no idea what I'll be doing at Ft. Riley....any nurses going there???
Good luck to everyone, I had a blast at BOLC but I also did 4 years of ROTC so it was fairly easy for me.
