A Problem Most People Want....

Hi All!

In a week I will be graduating!! Yay, but my mind is going non stop as to what to do upon my graduation!

I have been fortunate enough to be offered a NG position in a PICU(my first love) at a pediatric hospital a few miles from me. This is a great opportunity and I have been preparing for this for a while now.

This preparation leads to my next job offer, I have been doing my senior externship at another local pediatric hospital on a step down unit and they have offered me a job also!!

Great you say, but I dont know what to do!

The one hospital will put me on the unit I want. They also have good benefits. The second one will put me on the step down unit with the option to train on their unit in 18mos or so. My mom thinks I should pick the 2nd option because they are "Nationally Recognized" and they pay a nice chunk towards my student loans. They both start at about the same and they are both pretty close to my home. I don't know what to do!!

I have done my externship at the "big" hospital and I have gotten to know the nurses there, who are really nice, but I stare down the hall at the PICU hoping to be on the other side of the door! Any thoughts on what I should do?

'Momma knows best' is my vote. You are in an enviable position. You seem to be doing well at #2, step downs are very sickly too. And an opening in the PICU can occur earlier than 18 months! Put in a letter that you'd like to be considered for a transfer ASAP if mgt agrees. With all else being equal, they're paying against your student loans!!! NO BRAINER for me! You asked for my 3 pennies, Good luck to you.

Momma wants whats good for you, not what is best for you. She wants safe and logical but maybe you want to take chance and do something that is just for you! You spent your time in school and you have worked so hard; do what feels right. You should do what will make you happy in the long run. Don't have regrets and don't give yourself a reason to hold things against your mom.

Get rid of your student loan debt..... STAT!!

first of all, congratulations!!! on acquiring not one but two job offers specially in this economy. unquestionably, both positions are ideal to say least in your case, however, the one who will have to work in any of these positions will be you. therefore, it doesn't matter what other people say or advise you to do, go with your own choice good or bad, it will be your decision in the long run. wishing you the very best in all of your future endeavors...aloha~

Congrats on having such an enviable problem. I would say to go for #2 for two reasons. 1) the fact that they will help pay your student loan debt. That's huge! 2) you already know the facility and the work environment, and you know that you get along with your coworkers. That is also huge! Do not underestimate the importance of a cohesive, friendly work environment. That can make or break your experience as a new grad.

Good luck, regardless of your decision! You obviously have a great head on your shoulders, and it's obvious to others!

I agree, get rid of your school debt.

Thank you all. I think that getting rid of school debt is a big factor and so is the staff.

If your first love is PICU, that's where I would start. You might not get to transfer there later, you may be stuck in CCU. It might be worth it to be in debt and be happy.

Prioritize! First thing first - job that pays your student loan faster is the job for you (my opinion). Everything after that will fall in to place. Congratulations!:)

You could always take the PICU job, be fiscally responsible and pay down your debt. It won't be as easy as having your debt paid for you, but you will be where your heart is. I'm sure that offer to help pay off your loans comes with some strings attached. You may not get the opportunity to move to PICU for a long time, if ever, with job #2. Then you'll be stuck in a job, wishing you were doing something else, and possibly bound to a contract.
