A nurse friend of mine passed away: A WARNING TO ALL

Published

A friend of mine, someone I worked with for a few years , passed away Wednesday. She was doing home health care nursing and she was seeing a patient that day. The police/fire depts were called after a fire was reported. After they put out the fire, they discovered my friend and her patient had been shot multiple times. She was a mother and a wife, someone's daughter and someone's sister and friend. She will be missed. She was also a great nurse.

Let this be a warning to anyone who does home care, never let your guard down and always be aware of what is going on around you. Never be defenseless.

How dare you! I am not putting a lot of responsibility on MY FRIEND FOR HER DEATH!!!!!! I am simply saying be careful. Gees, this was the last response I want to hear.

Having been the recipient of violence on the job while working in home health, I thank you for your well intentioned warning. At least you care enough to say something, employers could not care less about the physical safety of their home health nurses.

As in any public forum, just take the good, useful and helpful posts to heart and the ones that don't help, ignore or discard. Try hard not to over-react in this very difficult period you are experiencing. There is lots of support to be had here, believe me and no one here wants to hurt you. Just know, there is not one person here who does not feel badly and see your pain and wish we could help. Hang in there and yes, our hearts and positive thoughts/prayers are with all family and friends involved.

Are home health nurses permitted to carry a gun?

It is wise not to advertise what measures you take for your own safety.

Agreed! I don't think that is an appropriate direction for this to go.....

You know what, I honestly apologize. I should have guess at you state of mind over this and been a little more gentle. You second post clued me in to just how distraught you are and now I feel bad. You first post was a little criptic and I didn't get where you were coming from but of course under the circumstances who would think to give all the details and who would know them. But I see now how upset you must be and I can't figure out why I didn't get it right off the bat. Once again I apologize and offer my sincere regrets over this horrible thing.

I am so very, very sorry for the loss of your friend. What is this world coming to when human life carries so very little value. Just read in the paper this morning that an 80 year old woman was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head in a local church parking lot...robbery is suspected to be the motive.

So sorry for your loss. Very, very tragic. As I have been to many different areas and homes, today, one never knows which one might put you in such danger. This is why many do not want to do homecare.
