A little off topic...

But you guys are basically my coworkers, and I need somewhere to talk this out.

So as many of you know I am in Nursing School, classes start in 9 days and clinicals start the week after.

So many of the women in my cohort are being a little overly dramatic about the likelihood that their clothing/shoes/watch will get bodily fluids on them. Fo example several of them have opted for all leather shoes to protect their feet from blood/urine. Even to the point of buying shoes that are less comfortable?

I have worked in healthcare for a long time, and I have worked bedside as a sitter/MA and have not really ever been in a situation where my feet were at risk of getting that dirty and the rest of my body was fine? Like if you have that much blood or urine coming your way you'll be getting it on your leg/sock/etc and your foot.

I dk it just seems silly.

I'm gonna call this one "a self correcting career choice". Either they'll embrace the suck and just accept that stuff will get on them (and opt for the comfy shoes over the waterproof ones) or they'll choose a different career. There is nothing "clean" about healthcare....silly kids!

I'm guessing none of these people are parents or have ever babysat/cared for children? I mean, body fluids happen. Take care, sure, but it will happen. And there will be very little you can do about it except clean-up up after.

Honestly, I'm not sure who these people are as far as experience yet. I am concerned about how many of them are already working on med cards and lab videos. The semester starts on Sept. 10, and I understand being ahead of the game, but we are about to have so little time to relax and refresh that I am not going to stress about things I don't need to get done (and haven't received direction on how to do). I'm talking about students asking other cohorts how to do things and access material now.

At this point in my career, I don't care about my shoes. I been vomited on, peed on, bled on... it's must be their first time in the medical field.

There was one lady in my nursing class like this; weeks before school started, she's sending us study group times and telling us how to access last years' materials so we can get a head start...then during clinic she put a foley in a patients butt...so it all evens out.

They just don't know yet.... They have no idea about care plans and test questions where all the answers are correct but one is the most correct.

Maybe they can develop nursing self-care plans? Something like: Get a life related to the anxiety of getting hit by patient body fluids as evidenced by having the time to think about such minutiae while real school problems are present?

Nursing school is hard enough without worrying about what your peers are doing with their footwear. Just focus on school. :)

I actually laughed out loud at this.

That's the plan, but it hasn't even started yet! First class is 9/10
