Things that want to make you slap people

I had a clinic full - Diabetic in the 400's with large ketones, student with tight throat who just had Benadryl, lunchtime meds / diabetic care.

A substitute wants her temp taken. I asked her to come back in 20minutes because I was busy. She gave me a look and left. 20 minutes exactly, she was back and the GOT MAD at me when I asked her to write down her name. Really??????

She actually argued the Nurse Practice Act with me. She actaully stated that documentation by school nurses must be a new rule as she had never gave her name at any other school that she substitutes at. Steam was coming out of my ears!! Would she sub for a class if the front office refused to give her a roster of classes????

When I have a busy office and a teacher sends a kid in to do a reflection for misbehaving in my busy NURSES OFFICE!! I should tell her that my office is not ISS!!

That really grinds my gears

When I'm on the phone and someone walks right up in front of my desk and starts talking to me....I'd like to have a trap door in front of my desk that empties into the parking lot.

When I have a mouth full of food and someone talks to me. I'm in grade 7-12, so kids all the way up to Principal (although to be fair, he hasn't done that. Yet.) I pointedly chew, swallow and say, "Excuse me?"

The kids get the hint more than the adults.

Don't know if this is slapworthy! I'm not much of a slapper.

Oh, OH!!!

I just thought of something. If my new secretary says one more time, "I keep telling my husband, by June I'll be a NURSE!" because she gave out a few band aids while I was at a meeting, I will slap her.

When teachers send kids to me to sit when a parent doesn't want them doing outside recess. Usually because that child has been ill recently. Awesome idea...Expose the child to even more illness!

Seriously!!!!!! How about the library?

I totally get it. I think as the days go by people have more and more expectations that they WILL be served immediately. It amazes me that these people can even function in the real world. Cause you know that nobody's snapping to attention to serve them at their GP's office. If that office is anything like mine - you're settling in for a good wait there.

But back to your particular lovely... The substitute is an adult - hand her the thermometer and go about your business. You don't need a nursing degree to know how to operate that piece of equipment. Yes, you are there for the kids and the staff too, but the kids come first - especially when one is having a true medical issue. Sure- if a staff member was having chest pains or some other medical issue, that would trump a student's tummy ache or other nonsense visit - but this clearly wasn't one of those times.

The next time she says this, look at her very seriously and say, "Well I've been a school secretary for years because I know how to answer a telephone." Don't give her a chance to respond. Just turn around and walk off.

I also would hand the substitute the thermometer and tell her I was busy with the kids...she apparently thinks it is all about her...oh well, she's gonna be disappointed.

Hey - make it more simple. Just respond that "you'll be a secretary just because you know how to sit at a desk". :roflmao::cheeky:

I've said it before - I just love what you school nurses face & do. Kudos to you. I couldn't do it!

I had one teacher send a student to me at 1:40 c/o sore throat & dismissal time is 1:45. I'm looking at the student like he's crazy. I told him honey it's time to go home & he was a bus rider, which meant he would be home in 10mins. I told him make sure you tell mom when you get home. As soon as he walked out the door another student came in saying there was "something" going on with her tooth. I told her I don't do anything for teeth & sent her on her way. I understand about covering yourself, but 5 mins before dismissal. Please, give me a break.

I had one student earlier this week that came to me saying, she scraped her leg walking out the door with her mother that morning & her mother told her when you go to school let the nurse look at it, & have her call me to tell me how it looks. I looked at that student like she was crazy & I said, huh?!. She repeated the story & I told her, no honey, that happened at home w/your mom if she was concerned about it she would have done what ever needed to be done with it. I told her the area is covered by stockings, I don't see any blood anywhere, you'll be alright(my favorite phrase, with my NY accent here in the south). She didn't want to leave my office she was insistent about me calling mom. I said again, "no honey, she will know the condition of it when she looks at it when you get home. Is it spring break yet?
