Letter home for our frequent visitors?
What do you do when mom is aware because every time student comes to me I call home. Students goal is to go home because she has admitted she doesn't like her class this year(2nd grade- but she swears she's grown) Student always comes to me c/o stomach or headaches, never has a fever. Student was sent to me 1st day of school. 5x in Aug, 7x in Sept & so far 2x in Oct. Counselor was made aware spoke with mom about frequent visits. Thought to myself wonderful that should be the end of that. Student came to me yesterday c/o of soreness to both legs. I ask when did this start. Her: in PE. Me: Did you participate in PE? Her: Yes. I did squats and walking & jogging. Me: So you're telling me you're here because your legs are sore from exercise? Her: Yes. I just had to sit back & take a deep breath. Her teacher is a 1st year teacher and I think she has a fear of parents. I tried to be understanding at first but it's driving me crazy. Yesterday I saw 5 of her students within a 1/2 hr time period.

Ridiculous Reasons to See the Nurse
How about this, I just saw a student who complained his finger was hurting because he was just shocked by the water fountain. But here's the kicker, he was escorted by the AP, who then stated to me when you call his mom tell her I've been trying to reach her. Call his mom, huh, whaaa?

Things that want to make you slap people
I had one teacher send a student to me at 1:40 c/o sore throat & dismissal time is 1:45. I'm looking at the student like he's crazy. I told him honey it's time to go home & he was a bus rider, which meant he would be home in 10mins. I told him make sure you tell mom when you get home. As soon as he walked out the door another student came in saying there was "something" going on with her tooth. I told her I don't do anything for teeth & sent her on her way. I understand about covering yourself, but 5 mins before dismissal. Please, give me a break. I had one student earlier this week that came to me saying, she scraped her leg walking out the door with her mother that morning & her mother told her when you go to school let the nurse look at it, & have her call me to tell me how it looks. I looked at that student like she was crazy & I said, huh?!. She repeated the story & I told her, no honey, that happened at home w/your mom if she was concerned about it she would have done what ever needed to be done with it. I told her the area is covered by stockings, I don't see any blood anywhere, you'll be alright(my favorite phrase, with my NY accent here in the south). She didn't want to leave my office she was insistent about me calling mom. I said again, "no honey, she will know the condition of it when she looks at it when you get home. Is it spring break yet?

LPNs in Jails?
I worked in a level 4 facility in SC. It was awful. Talk about a spirit killer. I heard so many nasty things & saw so many memberes. I didn't want to do anything with my husband when I 1st started that job. I used to work nights 12hr shift. It was passing meds in lock up, asst w/ sick call handle what ever "emergencies" that might occur, pill line & diabetics in am. I don't recall any just the occasional inmate trying to get up to medical for headaches " I think my pressure is high". The work load was really easy. It certainly makes you appreciate your freedom. Just don't try to find out why the inmates are there because that will make you even more nervous. For the most part the inmates were respectful. They seemed to be facinated by my hair(I have really locks that I used to wear up). So alot of the conversations used to center around that & the fact that I was pregnant about 7mths when I started that job. But the kicker for me was when I was "dashed"(cocktail of urnine, feces, probably spit, semen & blood since he was a cutter, thrown on me) by one of the inmates. That's when I knew it was time for me to go. That was my experience. Don't let that deter you. I guess it's like every where else, you have to find the right facility. Like I wrote earlier the work load was great on nights. Good luck to you whatever you decide.

Diabetic Logs
In addition to using a log I also use the site called Blue Loop. It's online so it can be accessed by the parent as well as the Dr's office. There is a space for BS, carbs, ketones, insulin(fast & slow), time & date, reason for testing(dinner, post activity), & any comments you want to make. You are able to see what the students f/s were before school or on the weekend & it's a great way to communicate w/parents.

Asthma Attack
Hello everyone. It's been a while since I've been here. I am new to school nsg. The hrs are great but pay is AWFUL...anyway, I had this situation where a teacher bought in her student to my office who clearly was having an asthma attack. So I look through the students who have meds kept in the clinic, and of course he isn't one of them. According to him he usually keeps his inhaler in his bookbag but used it the night before & never put it back. Let me just say this child is in kindergarten(I don't know what parent would trust a 5y/o to be responsible for something as important as making sure they have thier pump. You would think that would be the last question you ask before you leave the house if you are going to let them carry their pump). So I contact the mom, she mention that he had to use his pump and get a breathing tx the night before and that she will bring his med, she also states that she lives about 2 mins from school. So of course I'm watching the kid like a hawk. He starts swing his feet because he's board I guess, I tell him don't swing your feet. He dropped his pencil, I said I'll get it. I want him to use as little energy as possible. Anyway, what seems like forever time wise passes by and still no mom. So I call my to see where she is, and she's still home. Oh I live 2 mins away I'm coming. I'm thinking what are you still doing at home. So yet another 5 mins pass I'm ready to call 911, eventhough the childs s/s didn't get worse it only take 1 sec for it all to change. I say all of this to say, how long do you seasoned nurses wait before you call 911 for asthma attack?

Starting to not like sc
I ALWAYS wear my hair up, whenever I go outside. I remember after I first started my nsg job with corrections, the don said to me that I might want to consider cutting my hair. Mind you this is the same woman who interviewed me and offered me the job. So she knew exactly what type of hair I had. I was stunned that she even made such a statement. Needless to say after that she was defintely not one of my favorite people!

Starting to not like sc
It's good to know it's not just me. Like I mentioned in my post I have very long locks, and the looks that I get from people sometimes. It's like I have 2 heads or something. I've actually had people asked me if I could touch my hair. In this day and age when people have dreads I can't believe it's such a big deal. Maybe if some of the people down here were more open minded that we don't all have to look or sound alike I would be able to find work. The state itself is nice. I do admit I do enjoy the weather compared to NY.

Starting to not like sc
I've worked in nsg homes, clinics, and home care back in ny. The only reason I applied for correctional nsg in SC, because I couldn't find work anywhere else, and I was pregnant at the time, so I really needed medical benefits. But after being dashed by one of the inmates with feces, urine, and who knows what other body fluids while being 9 mths pregnant, and going back to work after maternity leave was over, I just couldn't do it anymore. Between the inmates threatening me and the officers acting like they were afraid of the inmates, I no longer felt safe, and I felt I was having a nervous breakdown while passing out meds in lockup. I have been on interviews, but I don't know if its that I have very long dreads(which I always wear pulled back and up), or I don't sound like everyone else down here, that they do not want to give me a chance. I had an interview the other day and the manager said to me well you clearly have the experience, and when I answered ques he would say good answer( I thought I was on family feud for a while!!) I don't know what to do any more. It's really discouraging! Any suggestions !?

Starting to not like sc
I've been a lpn for 5 yrs, I moved from NY about 1 yr ago, and I worked in correctional nsg for 1 yr, but I had to quit because I could not handle it. Now I'm working for an agency but I don't get enough hrs. I have been looking for another job for what seems like for ever with no luck. I have applied to the two hospitals in this area (florence). I have had interviews at the hospitals and their clinics with no luck. I am willing to travel to myrtle beach or columbia. I've applied to hospitals and clinics in those areas with no luck. I'm starting to regret moving down here. Any suggestions. Pls help!!
