Kid's team is going to Chicago 'burbs. Any food recommendations in the Bensenville/Wood Dale area? Anything we should try to see?

Many thanks!

Yes! We are planning a family trip the second week in August and I am writing all this down and getting more and more excited for the trip. Never been to Chicago. We are hoping to stay on Lake Michigan and take 2-3 day trips into the city, including to watch a game at Wrigley field. Any recommendations for fun beach towns within an hour of Chicago?

Depends on what you mean by "within an hour of Chicago." If you mean an hour from the southernmost point, then I would recommend South Haven, Michigan. Beautiful little town, wide beach with fine, fine sand, water isn't as cold as it is on the Chicago side. You might be able to get a good AirBnB deal.

Brookfield Zoo is nice, but there are no trains to it, and it can cost a lot. Try Lincoln Park Zoo, which is free year round and is just north of downtown on the Lakefront.

The Hollywood station on BNSF is within a couple blocks of Brookfield. My kids and I have taken it from Aurora and walked right up to the zoo!

Hey, do you have a subscription to Broadway in Chicago? When my kids were little, they would spend one day a week with their grandma. I bought a subscription for a Wednesday matinee, one seat, front center mezzanine. Relatively affordable, and I saw soooo many shows!

Oh, yeah, I love my subscription. We get most of the really good national tours, and a lot of world premieres these days. I also splurged for a subscription to the Goodman Theatre, because they're doing so many great shows, too. It's less than I'd pay for a weekend in NYC where I'd only get to see one or two things! (Though I've been known to do those still, since I have a good friend in the area, if it's something that won't tour or I'm dying to see ASAP.) And Goodman's got a really great program where if something happens and you miss your performance, you can get a standby ticket to another one...and you usually get decent a seat with that.

It's in the John Hancock building.

I don't do heights well so I will avoid it! I've done the Sears Tower here and Empire State in NYC but I do NOT like being up that high!

Thank you all! We ate at Fatt Mustard in Wood Dale (hot dogs, a great Greek salad, and burgers). Leona's (also in Wood Dale) hosted the team dinner and the deep dish was CRAZY good. But one slice was more than enough for dinner. Portillo's for the chopped meat sandwich (no, that's not grease, hon. That's gravy.)! Malnoti's for pizza the last day. And the competition times did not allow for tours of Chicago but we did tour Northwestern in Evanston, which was useful.

I could eat for two weeks in Chicago and never get tired...

Everybody needs a little Sister Jean in their life!!!

I live in one of the neighborhoods adjacent to Wrigleyville...just far enough away that the streets weren't packed but close enough to feel the energy. I stepped outside after watching the win on TV and one of my neighbors I'd seen but never spoken to laughed and hugged me. Normally, that would have been creepy, but in the moment, it was just a fun Chicago moment. It really was a special night - even people who didn't give two craps about baseball were cheering for that win.

I was at the game when they beat LA to go to the World Series. It was electric. We walked for a mile just to get a cab, and we were hugging and high fiving everyone. People were dancing in the streets. It was one of my favorite nights, ever:). I come from a long line of Cubs fans (my great-grandfather was a fireman at the Waveland station back when the Cubs won in 1908). Go Cubbies!

Glad you had a good time! My daughter takes dance classes right by Northwestern, so I walk the campus a few times a week while she's at class. I love that neighborhood:)
