Plans if not accepted into nursing school

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

OK, time for Stupid Question of the day. This is gonna sound really stupid, but what other choices do I have if I don't get accepted into a nursing program for next year? I really don't want to sit around and wait to apply again. don't get me wrong, I want to do nursing. But if it means sitting around for two years waiting to get accepted, I'm not sure if that's for me. I'll be applying this winter (in Dec) to various nursing school, but my GPA is a concern (will be in the 2.9-3.1 range). However, I have B's or better in all my science courses.

Also, one more thing you should know: I've always wanted to be either a CRNA or a teacher. would many of my pre-reqs apply if I decided to switch and go into education? I realize this choice is awhile away, but I would appreciate some insight. Thanks.

Well the way my school goes, you are already in once you apply to the school, you're just a pre-nursing major until you get to the professional phase. If I for some reason didn't make it, either failing the entrance exam or not having a good enough GPA I think I'll be disappointed but I had to be realistic so I chose a school that would have another major that would interest me just as much. So right now my backup major is Respiratory Care/Therapist. It helps that it has the same pre-reqs as Nursing so I don't lose out on the time I've invested in this, but I do hope I make it. :heartbeat

I would apply to LPN programs at the same time as a backup. If you get in, you can always bridge to an RN program as an advanced student which should cut the program down by 1 semester.

The LPN is a backdoor route to the ASN degree and it is easier to get into a RN program when you are a lPN and have all of your pre reqs done.

i would probably take more classes to raise my gpa (i love school) and get full-time hours where i work.

If I dont make it I plan on going to the technical college for the LPN program. I will be so devastated if I dont make it though. I have been working my butt off to get in.

This thread is of huge interest to me. I'm starting to wonder what I will do if I don't get admitted into nursing school.

I'm curious to know about how hard it would be to switch into some kind of medical research/scientist track. Since I've started my prereqs I've realized how interesting I find research.

I'm applying to ABSNs and already have degrees in other fields (both in non life sciences fields) as well as a career history in high tech/software marketing.

How does one make a switch into medical/pharm research?

I'm not 100% sure on this but I do have many friends doing medical/pharm research so I can let you know at least some avenues to get into this. All of them have degrees or are working on degrees in a biomedical science (biology, physiology, biochemistry, cognitive science, organic chemistry, etc.) and got into it through working for a professor. This is the more academic option, most ads up for research assistants are looking for bachelors, masters, or phd educated people. There are professional programs at the associate degree level in things like medical technology, though that is more of working in a medical lab (such as in a hospital or doctors office) to run diagnostic tests. Still, might be a foot in the door and would be a great way to get valuable skills.

It is worth saying though that this depends highly on the type of research you're interested - for example, with a background in technology or software, you could maybe get into a neuro lab since they very frequently do a lot of computation.

I'm with you on this one, there is no way I'll be waiting 2-3 years waiting to get into nursing school ( even though it IS what I really want to do) because life is too short to just sit around for that long..

So have a plan B, C, D, E and F ;) For me those are private nursing school ( expensive!! But no waiting lists usually) ,LPN school, Radiology, Ultrasound, PT assistant, dental hygienist and the list continues.. and if all else fails I'll do CNA or medical assistant

Hmm..the pre-reqs for nursing will probably not transfer for education.. but I'm not too sure on that you should check out the education programs in your area.

Have plan B , but work your butt off for plan A! (nursing school)

Well as far as I am concerned I will get in somwhere. But if the worst was to happens I would either go to grad school for my MSW or a Masters in history.

I've been wondering about this myself. I won't find out if I get in for my school's fall semester until late May/early June. If I don't, I will re-apply for the following spring semester and continue work as a nanny. It makes me very nervous to think about not getting accepted for the fall semester.

Check with your State Dept. of Education for requirements for a teaching license. I'm sure your prereq's would transfer for teaching Bio or some type of science. You'll have to take all the goofy education classes and have to Student Teach (not paid but full time commitment) to get a license, etc. Some states do offer emergency teaching licenses for people in the math/sciences area as there is a need for them but you still have to fulfill requirements. Good luck.

no plans because plan A will work.

How does one make a switch into medical/pharm research?

If you haven't done research before, you'll probably need a masters. My sister has a bachelors in a life science field and research experience, but got her job at a lab only on the condition that she get her masters within X years. The good thing is that you will get research experience in a masters program and that could help you when you start looking for a job.

Back on topic: my plan B is the local community college (plan A being the local university). I've applied and I'm well above the usual point cutoff. Otherwise, plan B would be applying in the spring to another local university that is slightly easier to get into (I didn't have the prereqs done for this fall).

Great thread , Ive been thinking about this myself.

So far I dont have an answer. I was already applying for the LPN first. I am running out of time and money. I feel so exhausted and cant imagine working while going to school.
