Fall 2012 Microbiology Students -- STAND UP!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Since we had these threads when I was in A&P I and II, and I thought I'd start one for Microbiology. Anybody else delving into the world of bacteria and viruses this fall? Let's start a support thread! Let's share our victories and failures, exchange study tips, and cheer each other on.

My first lecture and lab classes are tomorrow. I'm looking forward to this class.

Awww. Thanks, Alewis! :-) Good job on your first exam, too. 84% is great!

How are you guys studying? I received a 63 on my first test, but have 4 more tests and an a project+ lab to help bring my grade up. I have spent more time on studying. One of my classes is finishing up this week so I will have more time to study.

@EMT89: I record all the lectures and then transcribe them later. That way, not only am I re-listening, but I'm also slowing down and paying much closer attention. I always hear stuff I missed first time around. After that, I fill in my lecture notes and try to read them over every day.

I also utilize the tools our school provides. They put flash cards, games, and practice tests online for us, and I use them all. The games in particular help me out a lot.

On the test we just took, we had to know a list of gram positive and gram negative bacteria. I was having a really difficult time memorizing them, so I recorded myself reading the list, burned the recording to CD, and listened to it over and over while I was driving.

Lastly, my study partner and I often discuss concepts one of us has trouble with. Discussing it helps a lot, whether I'm helping or being helped. The more we discuss, the better off I am.

I got GONORRHEA and conquered it with a 100%. We had to do a major infectious disease report and I received 100%. I am totally stoked. Also, I am now an expert on the subject of purulent pus and swollen testicles. SORRY...tmi

EMT89- Our professor provides is with a study guide. It consists of concepts/questions. For that exam, I did the study guide 3 times. Repetition is what helps me with everything. I also go through and do all of the questions at the end of each chapter. More power to the people who can study without using the book. Personally, I prefer to use the book to cross-reference the information in the book with the information given by the professor.

That cracked me up immensely :roflmao:

Too funny, dsb_fam! I was given a food-borne illness bacteria. All the good (deadly) ones were taken, so I'm stuck with Bacillus cereus. Just your run of the mill diarrhea & cramping. Most people don't even go to the doctor for it. 2nd common cause of food poisoning. Yawn! Nothing as "fun" as gonorrhea...LOL :)

OK, I have to vent about the "kids" in our lab who are careless with their samples, break items, leave oil on the immersion lens and have a blasé attitude. A girl in our lab today (who has broken several things already) broke the #1 rule in our lab: do NOT carry test tubes by the cap! Not only did she lose control of the test tube, she spilled the sample of Salmonella all over my bench and my back (TSA broth).

Instead of being apologetic, she had the "it wasn't my fault" attitude  Our prof was visibly fed up with her. He said he was lowering her letter grade because he's warned her enough about being careless. (She wore flip-flops to lab, broke 2 sample slides, dropped a beaker, broke the tongs, etc.)

Is it just me being "old" or do these kids just not get it? How do they expect to get into nursing school, graduate and hold down a job? AARRGGHH....frustrating!!!

OK, vent over :D

No it's not just you being "old" it's people being careless and not understanding the severity of thier actions. I am probably close to the same age as the people that everyone conciders "kids" (I'm 21), but I personally feel like they are not quite as mature as they could be. I think that getting married at a young age and having kids made me grow up fast. It's something that I am very greatful for when I see how others close to my age act on a daily basis.

Hang in there.... chances are nursing school will make them grow up (similar to the military) or they won't make it through nursing school either because they dont pass or get kicked out.

Wow, I'm pretty sure my prof would've kicked her out by now. Once someone came with sandals and our prof told her to leave and return the next lab with the proper footwear. Our prof made it clear from the beginning that there was a wait-list for the class and if we were too careless another person would be there to take our spot. You aren't old. You're just smart, and that's becoming a rarity these days...

I totally relate. I am still completing pre-reqs and I can't believe the amount of disrespect in the classroom. Sometimes I feel in back in HS. People talking over the professor, taking to each other, on FB on their laptops, hurrying the professor at 9:55 pm because they have to be up early in the am (it's a 6-10 class so they KNOW what they're signing up for from the start). And most of these people are adults! Makes me crazy!

First test today. I have no idea how I did.

80 questions, plus 2 essay questions in 80 minutes.

I find out Tuesday how I did.

It was a lot of content. We shall see.

That's my other pet peeve....people talking while the professor is lecturing. It got so bad yesterday that my prof had to yell "SHUT UP!" and they still kept talking (after a brief 15 second stop ) So, when they started up again, he just quit talking and stared at us until they finally realized everyone in the room was listening to their conversation. It just makes me sick. I'm PAYING for this class! I WANT to be there! Don't waste my time (and everyone else's) by being rude & disrespectful. If I was teaching the class, I would have told them to leave. It's unreal how rude & self-entitled people have become...ugh!

This is now becoming a Microbiology/Therapy session...LOL :) Now, back to our regularly scheduled conversation...
