Is anyone else starting out from scratch?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I'm not sure if I asked before but is anyone else starting from scratch? I start pre-nursing courses Jan 13. My classes right now are Math 005 and soon to start, Biology 111. This is my first semester of pre-nursing. Everyone else seems to be starting with harder courses and here I am adding and subtracting in math 005! LOL Anyway, I had my first test in math on Tuesday and got 100!!! I am so excited even though it's a fairly easy course so far. I have so many pre-req's to get through until clinicals it will probably take me 5 years to become a RN :crying2:

I had to start with remedial math 97, then 99, now I am finally taking math 1101(Math Modeling). I am taking A&P I and it feels like I am finally taking something that has to do with nursing. Good luck!

What is math 97, 99 and 1101? Are they similar to 005?

Math 97 is basic algebra, math 99 is intermediate and math 1101 is a math modeling course.I got bad results on my CPE so I had to take it.

My point is, you are not the only one :)

Thanks so much. It helps to know I am not alone :)

You will get there. Remember that time will pass if you are taking classes or not, so you may as well take them and work toward the goal. I am currently in the third quarter of a seven quarter ADN program. There were classes that I was required to take prior to applying for the program. One thing that helped me was I got a copy of the nursing program course of study, and a copy of course offerings. There are many co requesites that can be completed prior to entering the program. I mapped out all the courses I would need, including the prereqs for classes. I typed them out in order that I would be taking the courses. When I complete a course I go to that list and bold the classes taken and insert the grade I received. I am finally to a point that I have more classes completed than I have to take. It just gives me a visual of how far I have come and where I need to go.

Good luck and stay the course. Just take it one day at a time.

The school I'll be attending allows us to CLEP out of some of the basic classes. College Math, Biology and Chemistry. The good thing is you pay a smaller fee $80+/- and then just self study and take the test. So you don't have to sit in the classroom and it costs less. The only downfall is it doesn't count toward your GPA if you do really well. (I think some schools you can pay a per credit fee and have it added to your GPA but I'm not sure how what works)

I found the books online at amazon pretty cheap.

When I first started college (back in 91), I had to take the second level math course. I retested, and came 1 or 2 points away from the college level. I had the dean sign off, and I skipped the 3rd level. I made a B in College Algebra about 5 years later. (stopped going & went back numerous times) lol

So, you're not the only one. Basic maths are good refresher courses. I seemed to learn more, and understand what what was learning much more with college algebra, than I did my Jr. year of high school back in 89-90. :)

Good luck to you! :)

You are definitely not alone. I spent my first two semesters taking two remedials in math that I needed before going on to the 101 class. Honestly, it was frustrating, but worth it. It would be overwhelming to try and pass math 101 without knowing the fundamentals. Hang in there, and before you know it you'll have finished it!

No truer words!!

You will be there! Keep working at it, study hard, and be proud of what you are accomplishing. Best of luck! :)

I havent taken a college course in 17 years. Only one of the courses I took can be applied to the ADN, so Im like you, (taking college prep algebra) and essentially starting from scratch.
