Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Nursing Students School Programs Nursing Q/A

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

Tips for spouses of those in the Capstone course (aka What NOT to say and do as your Cap-spouse is crying at the dining room table littered with articles and highlighters and earplugs and food crumbs because you've been eating and sleeping at your laptop for 3 days):

Not helpful:

I'm not worried about it, you always do fine”

Weren't you wearing that yesterday?”

Why are you so upset? It's only 10pm, you have until midnight”

Can you run over to my mom's for a second? Her remote isn't working”

What's for dinner?”

You don't have to get an A ya know, you just have to pass”

Can you order this for me real quick on Amazon?”

Just think - It'll all be over in 4 weeks!”

And getting all the dogs riled up and barking hysterically and chasing you in circles around the dining room table THAT I'M SITTING AT TRYING TO FINISH MY PAPERS AT 2340 is only slightly distracting.

um, addendums?

Yeah, that'll be week 2-4 ish (?). Those are the extra's that you will need.

Example: When I did my compassion fatigue/burnout and wanted to implement a program for nurses I had to have an executive summary (addendum A) to "sell the sizzle" to management so they'd pay for the program.

I also had a power point to show both management and the nurses on CF/BO (addendum B)

A flyer to announce the program (addendum C)

A survey for both before and after the program to obtain measurements (D & E).

I think that was it???

Another nurse did hers on post-op n/v, and she had a survey given to the nurses on their knowledge of n/v and a flyer for the patients given to them pre-operatively that educated them to other non medicated ways that nausea could be handled.

Oh, for the record, those are turned into the individual forum. I didn't receive a grade on them per se, just acknowledgement that they were completed. Too bad, the power point was pretty cool. The prof did like my vintage nursing pictures though. :)

I start next week too...question, you hand them into the individual forum? You get a grade or what, I'm a little confused on this.

Hi all,

So I am starting community health this week and am trying to get a head start on the week 5 project. I just left a message with my son's school nurse about getting her on board for something about head lice or maybe sending sick kids to school, as in when to keep them home. Or maybe something about vaccinations, and how kids who are not vaccinated effect the community. I am hoping for some feedback from those of you have have already done this project. Am I even on the right track here?

I think the school nurse was a great place to start! Your subjects sound more like parental education rather than student, though. Or is the age group of kids old enough to be taught those things? (Some parents may not appreciate the controversial immunization speech given directly to their children). If the kids are younger, the old standy-by of handwashing/germs is always a great option :) Or the "My Plate" for eating healthy (zillions of people don't know that the old food pyramid has long been retired).

Or is there a Spring festival or anything coming up for the school where you could have a makeshift booth for parents on the other subjects?

So it would have to be directed at the students? I was thinking parents are a part of the school community. At least they are at my son's grade school. There is always my daughters school as well, middle and high school combined. I am glad I started thinking about this already. I"m going to be busy!

Did anyone else find this a little annoying. I mean I picked this program because I work full time and have kids and I was told it was all online. Nobody told me I had to go out into the community and do an educational project. IS there more of this to come in other classes?

Yes, this is the one and only time you will have to be "out there" LOL. My presentation was probably an hour or so, and it was at someone's house. So I figured I'd take that over clinicals any day!

You're right, parents are of course part of the school community, but the teaching experience itself should be presented to your target audience. So if you have adult educational subject matter (when to keep your kids home if sick, etc), you'd deliver your presentation to the parents or when the parents are present. If it's about something you want to teach the kids, then just a visit to the school with them as your audience would be the plan.

Thank you so much for the input. And thank you for the happy news that this is the only time. I am so not a good public speaker. I think I will come up with something for the kids since they won't be too critical of me having a nervous breakdown :) I don't know why it is that I can teach an entire family how to do trach care and tube feeds, but put me in front of a group to speak and I am a nervous wreck.

On a different subject, I read the post about them dropping you from school. I would have absolutely lost it. How long exactly did they leave you hanging? Did you ever get an explanation?
