Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Specializes in Orthopedics.

As a new nurse, have any of you applied to the jobs that state you need "such and such years experience" or do you just forgo them? Has anyone with no experience applied to these jobs and have gotten at least an interview? My mother said that I should apply.. I feel against it, that I am wasting someone's time and that the person will feel that I can not follow instructions. (Although God knows I'm not getting a job following instructions! HAHA) What do you all think?

Specializes in Neurology.

Unless a job specifies that new graduates should not apply, I would recommend applying. My current position required a minimum of 2 years experience, but somehow I secured the job when I applied for it.

Specializes in Psych.

Apply, definitedly. That's how I got the inteviews I have, even made it to a second on tghe second place that called me back, and this is NOT a new grad job.

Apply anyway....my job required 3+ years experience...I got it with 6 weeks experience. You never know.

Specializes in LTC and School Health.

Apply anyway. They'll decide whether they're interested or not. Make sure your resume is strong and you play up any and all relevant experience though.

Specializes in Hospice / Ambulatory Clinic.

Unless it's explicit in that applicants that do not meet all the qualifications won't be considered then apply. A job listing is like a wishlist for an employer.

Specializes in Rehab.

yes apply thats what ive done and just had a interview today and the positin said preffered experience in this area

Specializes in Orthopedics.

Thanks for the responses everyone! Looks like I will definately be applying. For those of you who got the job, did you have prior medical experience? I've been in the hospitality industry for 12 years... And I really tried to play that up on how it could transfer to nursing on my resume.

Specializes in Trauma, ER, ICU, CCU, PACU, GI, Cardiology, OR.

unquestionably, it doesn't hurt to apply you might be surprise with the results, therefore, don't sell yourself short, got for it~

Specializes in LTC, wound care.

I put my work experience in a law office, just because I had a great reference there and the clients loved me. Turns out, the interviewers really liked that. Customer service, ya know?

Your hospitality experience taught you some very valuable skills that will crossover to nursing.

My years of waitressing taught me how to carry multiple items in one hand, I can carry a water cup, pill cup, insulin syringe, nitro patch and alcohol swab all in my left hand.

And unless you're really good at multi-tasking, there's no way you'd have lasted 12 years in hospitality.

Good luck withthe job search.
