New York Presbyterian New Grad Nurse Program

U.S.A. New York

Published

I graduated in December with my BSN (second degree) and am interested in applying to the New Grad Nurse program at NYP. Does anyone know if NYP has New Grad applications available on their website for December grads (e.g., in December/January)? I know they have applications for May/June graduates. I hear that the applications are up for a brief amount of time and get taken down quickly. I just want to make sure I don't miss the posting. Is checking the website the only way? Thanks!

Just wanted to say "B" average is the new "C+" for both new grads and even nursing programs. NYC hospitals, at least the top rung Manhattan facilities all want to see 3.0 or better for new hires and don't think there is a nursing program left in the City that hasn't upped the average for getting in and remaining to "B" or better.

As for working as an aide/PCT during nursing school it sounds wonderful on paper but so many programs advise students *not* to work, and if they do should push come to shove with their grades, then though cheese.

hey, same situation here. I graduated April 2009. Passed my RN exam November 2012. And on April, it will be exactly 4years that Im out school.

I think i might need a refresher course as well,

let us know what happen to ur refresher program at Molloy?..

Im thinking of getting it as well, probably this month.

Thanks for the information everyone - much appreciated. I was placed on the waitlist and received an email to take the career battery after which I received another email encouraging me to apply again to NYP after I worked elsewhere. Was this because of the answers I provided on the careery battery? Any idea as to the kind of answers they look for? I wasn't able to work as an aide at NYP because I attended an accelerated nursing program outside of NY. I also didn't have time to do externships during my summers because my program was 18 straight months including summers. Congrats to all who made it through. Just wondering if it gets any easier with nursing experience. I know they prefer internal applicants regardless of whether you're a new grad or experienced nurse.[/quote']

Hey did you apply for the dec2012/jan2013 prog? i applied for that prog and was placed on the list but havnt heard anything from them yet.

Hey, yes I did. Have you heard back yet?

I heard from various sources that NYP is only taking internal candidates even for new grad positions. Internal candidates as in people working at NYP as CNAs, Patient Companions, Unit Clerks, etc that just graduated with BSN RN. Volunteers come after that and if there are any new grad jobs left then they take external candidates with credentials such as EMT, or CNA at another hosp. Of course, NYP continues emailing you notices periodically stating: "Most of our finest nurses got their first year of experience elsewhere. Please consider applying to NYP once you get a year of RN experience elsewhere". Can you believe that? They want us to get our experience elsewhere and then after a year is up, jump ship on (leave) the hospital who was nice enough to hire and train us, giving us the experience. Just not cool, I plan to stay on for several years at whichever hospital is kind and considerate to appreciate my qualifications and is willing to hire and train me in hospital nursing.

Thanks for the input estrellaCR! Have you worked as a nurse? I was also under the impression that internal candidacy beared a lot of weight. I understand and respect their loyalty in that regard but it tends to leave out other people who had extensive clinical hours in nursing school. I wonder how external candidates from out-of-state nursing schools get hired there. I'm ready to cast a bigger net though.

I got the same notice from NYP. I will love any agency nice enough to hire me. I have a shiny new BSN and RN license that I want to use and I'm ready to get my hands dirty. All I need is training. I graduated with strong academic standing but I don't know if it makes a big ripple when many applicants have the same credentials and years of experience on top of that. But there are still some fortunate new grads out there with jobs and to you guys I say, congrats and I hope to join you soon someday. As for re-applying to NYP after one year of RN experience elsewhere, I just wonder how it would work logistically in light of their loyalty to internal candidates. It's still experience elsewhere even if it's experience.

If anyone has tips on how to stand out as an applicant and make it to/past the Career Battery/interview/get a New Grad position, it would be much appreciated!

Hi NewGrad01, Yes i been working as RN at outpatient clinic for 9 months. It is good experience as clients have variety of medical needs. I get to use nursing skills such as assessment, teaching, some treatment, etc.

The Internal Candidate only for this time is just for new grad positions as NYP is flooded with new grad apps from all over the US. Once you have a year of experience, Internal (as in transfers, not new grads) and External candidates are about on the same field. NYP frequently has Open House for Experienced RNs (meaning 1 yr exp). However, I plan to stay loyal to whichever hospital is willing to give me my first hospital experience. If NYP did not want me as a new grad, then they wont get me with my experience that i got from another hospital.

You should try non hospital jobs also such as outpatient clinics, residential treatment programs, substance abuse rehabs, foster care agencies, etc. They provide good experience, you get paid (as opposed to no $ right now when not having any job), etc. Check www.socialservice.com , www.indeed.com , www.idealist.com for postings on RN positions. Some state 2 yrs experience required but apply anyway. Me and a few people I know got hired as new grads.

I really wish that nurses would finally call these hospitals bluff and NOT rush back to apply for the jobs they will graciously consider you for after getting your year's experience elsewhere. If they're not willing to invest in new nurses, why should we be willing to invest in THEM? We need to empower ourselves and take back our profession.

Thanks guys for the posts. I'm happy to say that I'm working there now!

congratulations @newgrad01! Just wondering, how long after you applied did you receive a call about a position? and did they want you to start working immediately after you were hired?

Thanks kaaatydid! I heard back about 2-3 months after applying. They wanted me to work ~1-1.5 months later.

Does anyone have any updates on the new graduates? Seems quite difficult to obtain an externship at NYP
