just sharing this here:

somebody asked: "you're a nurse?" that's cool, i wanted to do that when i was a kid. how much do you make?"

the nurse replied: "how much do i make?" ...

i can make holding your hand seem like the most important thing in the world when you're scared...

i can make your child breathe when they stop...

i can help your father survive a heart attack...

i can make myself get up at 5am to make sure your mother has the medicine she needs to live...

i work all day to save the lives of strangers...

i make my family wait for dinner until i know your family member is taken care of...

i make myself skip lunch so that i can make sure that everything i did for your wife today is charted...

i make myself work weekends and holidays because people don't just get sick monday - friday. today, i might save your life.

how much do i make?

all i know is, i make a difference.

LOL this is nice, but then I'd get the feeling that they'd just roll their eyes and give me that ''really????" face? c'mon how much do you really??? make?

Then I'd proceed to restate that entire paragraph over again.

i'm with you all, but only to a point. the nursing profession has been held back, for centuries now, by the angel-of-mercy, sacrificing, unselfish stereotypes (you can see thetruthaboutnursing.com for more on that). sure, we do great work, but we do it because we are well-educated, serious professionals with a lot of responsibility, and this is how we choose to earn our salaries.

it'd be perfectly ok with me if we could de-emphasize the soft-focus presentations and give the answer along the same lines as you'd get if you asked an engineer, a chemist, an architect, a teacher, a carpenter, or anyone else who works for a living. "i do pretty well with the overtime," or, "an experienced staff nurse can earn around $100,000 a year in some settings."
