The cats could add a fun dimension to the festivities.

And they go well with Turkey!

That poor cat that Davey Do stuck in the oven was my Boots (featured in my profile picture). He crossed the Rainbow Bridge 3 years ago but that's not how he went!

The cats could add a fun dimension to the festivities. Come on over! Knowing my Mom she'd have a blast feeding a bigger crowd. Plus it'll save me from leftover hell later. After all, there's only so many things that can be done with leftover turkey.

My stepmother used to make enchiladas using a chicken enchilada recipe with leftover turkey, served with refried beans and a salad every Friday after Thanksgiving. Or turkey tetrazzini, turkey/rice casserole, "pulled" turkey bbq sandwiches. You can freeze the meat for later. Your mom sounds amazing!

It was one of the most miserable Thanksgivings ever but now we can laugh about it, nearly 12 years later. We decided to have Thanksgiving on a cabin by a lake. Sounds nice, right? Wrong.

--I was 7 months pregnant and huge as a house. Due to space issues we were all crammed together in this cabin. I was forced to share the bottom bunk of a bunk bed with my toddler who kicked all night. My husband slept on the top bunk, which was deemed too unsafe for either me or our toddler. The second night, someone found an air mattress for me to try out but it lost air about halfway through the night.

--At about 6Am my grandma tried to alter her famous pecan pie recipe with 1/2 Splenda and 1/2 sugar, and that resulted in the pie fizzing and boiling over and making burned pie on the bottom of the oven.Which sent up black smoke and set off the alarms, forcing us all to escape and walk around for awhile while the smoke cleared. Most of us were still in our pajamas and were walking around the snow-covered neighborhood that way. When the oven was cool enough, the pie contents had to be removed to prevent further burning and smoke for the turkey that was due to be cooked. A team of relatives ended up scraping the oven with metal spatulas while simultaneously vacuuming the scrapings up.

--My stepmother was in nursing school at the time and was stressed out and unsuccessfully trying to study for an exam. My teenaged cousin was going through a bout of depression and sulked the whole time, and had tears. I, being pregnant and sleep-deprived, was not doing much better and had a couple of arguments with my husband. One of them happened in what I thought was the privacy of our bedroom but it turns out I had left the baby monitor on downstairs so everyone heard it.

--The evening of Thanksgiving my toddler locked herself in the downstairs bathroom and we could not get the door off. The best we could do was to take the knob off, but the other part of the knob was broken and could not be made to open the door. We passed her cookies through the doorknob hole to keep her happy. Considered calling a locksmith but my dad and uncle finally were able to break the broken part of the doorknob mechanism off enough to get her out. We had to make a run to the hardware store and replace the door knob in the cabin before leaving.

-- Then later that night we were awoken to some crashing in the garage. A bear had managed to pry the garage door open and get to the garbage from our meal. We let the bear have all the room he needed, but the next morning we all had to pick up the trash that the bear, and probably some racoons and other creatures too, had dragged and scattered all up and down the street.

My favorite pie! Every Summer my grandma would make it for my birthday. Miss her.

I think you are the winner! So far . . .

Even though it is hard to compete with dogs and turkey fat!

So sorry for laughing anon..that sounds horrible! You should try to market that story to Lifetime, it sounds like a great movie! I've been watching a lot of the round the clock Christmas movies on Hallmark channel and your story sounds more entertaining than some of those I've seen.

I was just reading my recounting of this event to my kids and husband after posting it here. We just had another good laugh. My teenager remembers being locked in the bathroom and eating cookies. My husband agrees that it really was as bad as this, and the one who was then in-utero was sorry she missed all the fun.

Edited to add: my husband just reminded me that my cousin had had enough of us and decided she would rather sleep on the balcony porch of her parents' room in a zero-degree sleeping bag than have to share a space on the livingroom floor, where some of the people were sleeping. She is the one who first alerted us to the bear in the middle of the night because the garage was below the balcony.

This Thanksgiving.....I am thankful I am finally, blessedly home after 7 months of hospitalization and I am happy to be alive after my brush with death in April. I was told I was one of the sickest patient they had ever seen.....creepy when you think about ALL the sick patients they see on a regular basis.

God Bless the staff at MGH especially the ICU and my team of doctors with the ICU staff for saving my life. I owe you BIG TIME!
