Patients that are hospitalized because of a dare...

How many of you nurses took care of a pt hospitalized due to a dare?? If so what's your story...I took care of a patient that ruptured his esophagus because a friend dared him to swallow a shrimp whole. Unfortunately, the man died a couple days after surgery. Has anyone seen bizarre cases like this one?:confused:

ERs saw a booming business when "America's Funniest Home Videos" debuted, and also in the wake of "Jackass" and now with YouTube - especially when combined with alcohol.

I have 3 sons, I cringe when I hear the words "hey watch this". One of the deciding factors in my becoming a nurse is my beloved 17 year old. He has had 2 ambulance rides and 3 hospital stays, not to mention 4 MRIs and various other x-rays and stitches....

Took care of a classmate that was dared to jump off a roof into a swimming pool. Stayed in the hospital a week hooked up to a PCA but recovered 100%.

What's really scary is this guy is a commercial airplane pilot.

I knew a guy who had done the same thing. He was actually fortunate that he'd gone in feet first. As bad as it is having lots of metal in your leg, it still beats the heck out of the results of going in head-first.

i haven't cared for such a patient myself but tales around the nusing station would curl your hair AAAUUUGGG

I had a pt once who strapped himself onto the hood of a four-wheeler on a dare. No helmet to boot. As destiny would have it, the thing flipped and he ended up with a SCI that left him completely paralyzed from waist down and with no fine motor in his hands.

And of course, he gets pressure sores from being unable to move very well, and ends up with MRSA & VRE in said sores. Not a pretty picture. Late 20s.

On our floor we took care of a pt. that had to go to surgery to get something taken off of his member because of a dare. The pictures were quite interesting. It took another look at plumbing that week.
