  1. I know this board can not offer advice. My nursing unit that I work on as an RN has had many staff members have this virus. I was wondering if it is crossing state lines and things. Sometimes these illnesses crop up in other places. I was just curious.
  2. Allergies? Are you kidding me? Fever, cough, thick sputum and all most everyone on my unit has it. Thank you, but no thank you for the "allergies" advice.
  3. Hello all! My unit has this cold thing that starts out as a upper respiratory thing then it lands in your lungs with think yellow sputum. I'm talking chunky. My whole unit has got it and this is the 2nd day I have called off. I didn't call off for a year until the last 2 days. How long does it hang on and does anyone else where have this nastiness? I work on a surgical unit, so I didn't want to go in and give these people my cold and end up with pneumonia. You know? Anything will help! :)
  4. On our floor we took care of a pt. that had to go to surgery to get something taken off of his member because of a dare. The pictures were quite interesting. It took another look at plumbing that week.
  5. I thought the very same thing. I do watch the show and also yell at the TV when it is so obvious. I HATE it when they mispronounce something. Sometimes it is so simple! I know what is real so I try to nevermind it. Just like movies, no one can jump from buildings with out some really wrong with them afterwards. :)
  6. I did a work diary my first year of nursing. I put down room numbers and some details like couldn't get a iv or whatever. Never names and enough vagueness that you might know, but no one else. I still do it, but not as much as I should. I think it helped me get to sleep better hince I worked nights. I did it right before I went to sleep, so I didn't dream as bad in nursing. I encourage it and please let us know how it goes. I have a "fancy" diary, but since you are a guy you might just do a spiral notebook or 3 ring binder. Some days it was 3-4 pages sometimes it was a couple of sentences before I fell over. Good luck and I hope it helps your mental well being.
  7. Agency comes and goes. At one time no agency and last month they had to let one come in for hours. Float pool is on our floor alot. I know most of them by name and face.
  8. Sometimes they will switch some days around such as work today and have Saturday off or whatever. It will be a stretch for incentive pay which is $10.00 roughly on top of your hourly pay. The new schedule is coming out and I hope that it isn't as bad as this one. One night we had NO techs scheduled after 11pm. NONE. Charge nurse did some deals and it worked out, but that is the type of thing that I am busting my head against the wall about now. There is a new person doing the schedule so it might help. I like the raffle thing. Everyone gets called even on their vacation. Who wants to come in on their vacation that they scrimped and saved for? Thank you for your ideas and I'll float them to the managers. If you see a fireball hit the sky you know what happened!
  9. I don't think you understand. I do say NO everytime. I was trying to get a solution to help with this system. That is all. Thank you for some things that help you in your hospital.
  10. Not enough people scheduled! Sometimes people are sick, but usually that is covered by the house r/t short time period. Sometimes they are good about calling in the morning for night shift, but the other day it was two hours. Most of the time us night shift have been up all day! Thank you for the suggestions.
  11. Oh, I tell them no all the time. I have not gone in once in several months. I like the solution about the available days and calling 5am or 5pm. Something has got to give.
  12. Hello fellow nurses, I love the people I work with and my floor that I work on now. I work three 12's a week. Lately I have been scheduling them three in a row. A handful of us do the same thing on this floor. I have been off for 6 days due to my schedule. THey have called me at least 3 if not 4 days to come into work. It's not just this week. If I'm off 3 they will call 2. I work what is considered full time as well as most of the nurses. I'm looking for an answer for this, because I'm not the only one getting aggervated by this. I mean, my days off is my days off. I have things planned and I also work night shift. 7p-7a. Would you think that working 4 hours on top of the three 12's or every other week work an 8 help with this? Some floors do this. Or my solution, just hire some more people! Anything will help. so I can put it in the "suggestion box". Any suggestions are better than nothing. Alittle vent here, but what do they expect us to do on our days off sit and wait by the phone to not be doing anything. I have told them I'm making soup and getting ready to go to the store. Cooking relaxes me, and stocking up my freezer for meals during my work days are alot more important that making more money that I don't have time to spend anyways! I feel better! Send me the suggestions!
  13. I'm boycotting Hershey's now! My money can go to someone else that makes better chocolate.
  14. Thank you all. I thought this can't be the only person who does this. I mentioned it to some of the people who where there are one of them said, oh yeah so and so had one. It's amazing. I didn't get good sleep r/t to some of that stuff. I'm dead on my feet today. I was looking for some other love note because it comes in threes right? Of topic a bit. Last night called a code, cancel the code, think about transfering the pt, then cancel that too. Pt. got worked up blah blah blah. Everything came back ok relativly. Then the surgeon come in and says he is going home? :uhoh21: all at once. It's like did they even check the chart or the nurse who was taking care of him all night? NO> Sometimes it is amazing. Get good sleep! :)
