Does anyone else have the everlasting cold?
I know this board can not offer advice. My nursing unit that I work on as an RN has had many staff members have this virus. I was wondering if it is crossing state lines and things. Sometimes these illnesses crop up in other places. I was just curious.

Does anyone else have the everlasting cold?
Allergies? Are you kidding me? Fever, cough, thick sputum and all most everyone on my unit has it. Thank you, but no thank you for the "allergies" advice.

Does anyone else have the everlasting cold?
Hello all! My unit has this cold thing that starts out as a upper respiratory thing then it lands in your lungs with think yellow sputum. I'm talking chunky. My whole unit has got it and this is the 2nd day I have called off. I didn't call off for a year until the last 2 days. How long does it hang on and does anyone else where have this nastiness? I work on a surgical unit, so I didn't want to go in and give these people my cold and end up with pneumonia. You know? Anything will help! :)

Patients that are hospitalized because of a dare...
On our floor we took care of a pt. that had to go to surgery to get something taken off of his member because of a dare. The pictures were quite interesting. It took another look at plumbing that week.

Why no nursing love from Grey's?
I thought the very same thing. I do watch the show and also yell at the TV when it is so obvious. I HATE it when they mispronounce something. Sometimes it is so simple! I know what is real so I try to nevermind it. Just like movies, no one can jump from buildings with out some really wrong with them afterwards. :)

How to start a work diary
I did a work diary my first year of nursing. I put down room numbers and some details like couldn't get a iv or whatever. Never names and enough vagueness that you might know, but no one else. I still do it, but not as much as I should. I think it helped me get to sleep better hince I worked nights. I did it right before I went to sleep, so I didn't dream as bad in nursing. I encourage it and please let us know how it goes. I have a "fancy" diary, but since you are a guy you might just do a spiral notebook or 3 ring binder. Some days it was 3-4 pages sometimes it was a couple of sentences before I fell over. Good luck and I hope it helps your mental well being.

An answer to them calling everyday!
Agency comes and goes. At one time no agency and last month they had to let one come in for hours. Float pool is on our floor alot. I know most of them by name and face.

An answer to them calling everyday!
Sometimes they will switch some days around such as work today and have Saturday off or whatever. It will be a stretch for incentive pay which is $10.00 roughly on top of your hourly pay. The new schedule is coming out and I hope that it isn't as bad as this one. One night we had NO techs scheduled after 11pm. NONE. Charge nurse did some deals and it worked out, but that is the type of thing that I am busting my head against the wall about now. There is a new person doing the schedule so it might help. I like the raffle thing. Everyone gets called even on their vacation. Who wants to come in on their vacation that they scrimped and saved for? Thank you for your ideas and I'll float them to the managers. If you see a fireball hit the sky you know what happened!

An answer to them calling everyday!
I don't think you understand. I do say NO everytime. I was trying to get a solution to help with this system. That is all. Thank you for some things that help you in your hospital.

An answer to them calling everyday!
Not enough people scheduled! Sometimes people are sick, but usually that is covered by the house r/t short time period. Sometimes they are good about calling in the morning for night shift, but the other day it was two hours. Most of the time us night shift have been up all day! Thank you for the suggestions.

An answer to them calling everyday!
Oh, I tell them no all the time. I have not gone in once in several months. I like the solution about the available days and calling 5am or 5pm. Something has got to give.

An answer to them calling everyday!
Hello fellow nurses, I love the people I work with and my floor that I work on now. I work three 12's a week. Lately I have been scheduling them three in a row. A handful of us do the same thing on this floor. I have been off for 6 days due to my schedule. THey have called me at least 3 if not 4 days to come into work. It's not just this week. If I'm off 3 they will call 2. I work what is considered full time as well as most of the nurses. I'm looking for an answer for this, because I'm not the only one getting aggervated by this. I mean, my days off is my days off. I have things planned and I also work night shift. 7p-7a. Would you think that working 4 hours on top of the three 12's or every other week work an 8 help with this? Some floors do this. Or my solution, just hire some more people! Anything will help. so I can put it in the "suggestion box". Any suggestions are better than nothing. Alittle vent here, but what do they expect us to do on our days off sit and wait by the phone to not be doing anything. I have told them I'm making soup and getting ready to go to the store. Cooking relaxes me, and stocking up my freezer for meals during my work days are alot more important that making more money that I don't have time to spend anyways! I feel better! Send me the suggestions!

"Love notes" reappear in a staff meeting
Thank you all. I thought this can't be the only person who does this. I mentioned it to some of the people who where there are one of them said, oh yeah so and so had one. It's amazing. I didn't get good sleep r/t to some of that stuff. I'm dead on my feet today. I was looking for some other love note because it comes in threes right? Of topic a bit. Last night called a code, cancel the code, think about transfering the pt, then cancel that too. Pt. got worked up blah blah blah. Everything came back ok relativly. Then the surgeon come in and says he is going home? :uhoh21: all at once. It's like did they even check the chart or the nurse who was taking care of him all night? NO> Sometimes it is amazing. Get good sleep! :)

But it's MY medical information
yeah, what gives! If it is your or your childs info you have the right to know. Like it is this super secret thing or something. After a long night this is one of my top pet peaves! :)

"Love notes" reappear in a staff meeting
I usually don't start alot of posts, but when I do usually there is a purpose. Got to work last night and had two "love notes" in my mailbox. One for not putting a teaching topic for a post op person. The way it is worded it sounds like you put if they are mentally incapable of being taught, like they are slow or something. That is how it is everywhere else in the hospital. Ok, learn from that one. Move on, next didn't put something on the blood sheet. I hit my head and get angry with myself and check that I put it in the main charting but didn't double chart for it that day. OK 2 years and first blood "love note" got it don't leave without double checking first. GOT IT! :) I have a good night. Patients are ok and I"m about to leave. Manager asks if I'm going to be at the staff meeting. I haven't been one on this floor, so I begrudgently stayed. Three speakers are there. Some of the things are relevent for me to know after 12 hour night shift and I have to be there in 12 hours for another one. I nod and go on. Then it all comes out. First, I feel if you get a nasty gram it is between you and the person who wrote it. Be it the manager or her "helper". Long story on that one. Maybe another day. So, my manager starts bringing out copies of all the nasty grams people have gotten over the last several months. Making them an example for everyone to see. For example, I forgot to mark the 0600 slot on the double charting paper. I charted it on my main charting, but the "restraint worksheet" wasn't filled out. I smile reliezed I picked up my charting and didn't go back to do it. ONCE in 2 years! Here I sit and everyone can see what that paper is and who did it. We are nurses scan papers quickly everyday. It is something we learned in nursing school. Oh, no here we are for everyone to see how someone messed up and didn't fill out the right form effectivly. I have only had a few nasty grams over the last 5 months, but there they are for everyone to see. It did no good for someone else not to make the same mistake. This isn't school and say don't do that because they will die. This is don't forget to do your double charting. It wasn't just me, but some other people's too. Also, about some heparins one day. I didn't have them to give so I was waiting on pharmacy. I forgot to tell day shift. Guess what... I heard it from the boss for the first time in the meeting. I had settled it with the day shift nurse involved like a week ago. It was like we were on trial and couldn't say anything. There are some other stuff that went on, but for another post. I hate to complain, but that was rediculous. For the restraint paper. I was the first one to do one in TWO days for this person. I guess if you don't have it you can't display it for the whole floor to know about. To beat all, it takes almost 5 months to get some important questions answered by this person, but these papers can come out of no where in a meeting. I have a feeling this isn't the first time this has happened. I'm going to talk to some other people. I just had to get it off my chest. Do I need an answer other than someone needs to look like they are doing a job? NO! But I have to get some good sleep and it is good to get it off my no charting double chest! To beat all, I clocked out at 0850 for all that folishness. Deep breathe and go get some good sleep!

Most silly reason for being called in the office?
I'm sorry you had to go through that, but it sounds too familiar. One day I was pregnant, when I was asking about who has kids that would be interested in something going on that day. BTW I"m not pregnant. My favorite was that I didn't give to counts on my iv fluids in report. Someone emailed my boss to tell them that and I was "made aware" at the nurses station by my manager. I haven't seem my boss in three weeks and this is the first thing that she says. I was mad the whole shift. I guess if someone is talking about you then they are leaving someone else alone.

You Know the patient is going bad when...
I had that happen on my floor once. I was told we have extra staff tonight you will be ok. The family member was trying to recruit me to another local hospital while here mil is dying. I couldn't make this up!

Work 3 nights in a row or keep schedule?
- Work 3 nights in a row or keep schedule?
I'm required to work on weekend a schedule Friday and Saturday and one weekend day a month which is Friday for me. They are already set in stone which weekend and which weekday. I'm going to try the three in a row. It will either kill me or make me wonder why I haven't done this before. This week I worked TW off TH then on Fri all night 12's I don't know which way is up sometimes. :) Thank you for everyone giving their input. It is greatly appreciated.- *sigh* How Many Times a Week Do You Say No?
I started a new job. They call alot on my days off for me to come in. I work night shift. One charge nurse will not even look at the schedule to see if you are going to be there already. I have called them back and said I would like to come in extra, but I am already there. Hopefully it will stop because I am about to unplug the kitchen phone so I can sleep. I am upstairs, but if you just got to sleep???- What would you do?
I'm sorry I didn't get back to you on this situation. After several people said I was at fault and didn't see that it is totally inappropriate to treat others like this I didn't look at the postings anymore. I now have looked at Daytonite post. I'm happy that someone is understanding what really went on. Since the incident, I got a new job and am a better person for it. That floor and manager was sick for my system for physical and mental health. Thank you for the support Daytonite. I'm kicking myself for not seeing the post till 4 months later. I just wanted to let you know thank you and it is nice to have someone who understands that it isn't ok to treat others the way that manager treated me and other nurses underneath her. If that happens in the future, which Lord help me if it does, I'm going to go up the chain of command it will make their head spin. I"m tired of people thinking that I am your manager lick my boots. You know.. Anyways I'm in a lot better position for it now. I was talking with some other staff after I got comfortable on this new floor and the float staff and response staff knows she is crazy. It isn't just me. The angels sing! :) Everyone keep their head up and don't take this crap from no one. You are better than to get yelled at all the time because they have personal problems or something. Be the bigger person and get it rectified before it eats at you like it did me. The staff lived in fear all the time. At one time she stated that she wanted the staff scared of her. What kind of answer is that! I was looking at my allnurses posts while I was on that floor. I was angry and not enjoying my job overall. It's no wonder I feel better now. Lastly, I hope someone will learn from my mistakes and newness in this field. It's not worth your mental and physical health for no job and it isn't right to take that kind of abuse from a superior. Be the bigger person. At first I thought I was being cowardly for leaving, but why be in a position that hurts yourself if you don't have to. Keep your head up and have a great day.- Work 3 nights in a row or keep schedule?
Hello all! My husband is going to be taking some classes through work. He works days and I work 12 hour nights. Usually, I get up anywhere between 1630 and 1730 and eat dinner see husband till 1815 and go to work. He is gone when I get home in the morning. So, now for three weeks in May he is going to getting home possibly at 1800, maybe later. I usually work 2 days off at least 2 days then pick up the third in the week. I was wondering would it be better just to work the three in the row to have "more time" but be sleeping on the "first day off" or just keep it the way it is and go with it? I really hate working 3 in a row, but my new job is alot easier and not as stressful. I guess if I like it then maybe I will stick with it. I would like some feedback from people who work three in a row all the time. Thank you. - Work 3 nights in a row or keep schedule?
