Nursing Student annoyed me
Sorry that you had a rough day. I guess that's the name of the game. The student nurse, however, will soon understand what's it's like to be in your shoes. I could tell you it takes a while to understand the big picture....and you really don't until you ARE the nurse responsible for your patients.

Our census is very low, canceled right and left
Some of the units in our hospital are experiencing the same phenomenon. Our ccu has been calling nsgs off left and right due to low census. One of the full-time nsgs there, only worked 12hrs in a two week period due to low census. I work in a busy CVICU and we also have been slow. Dolce, you made a great point about percieved security in the so called nursing shortage. With the economy the way that it is...I am not so sure anymore....

Is BSN ( bachelor degree in nursing) worth it ?
Why not go all the way? It can only benefit you in the long run! The benefits aren't always financial in nature. Learning new things as you know adds to you as a person. That's the whole idea of having a bachelor's degree, is to make the student more well-rounded. With that being said there was an article recently written about the declining value of a college degree, read here...http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB121623686919059307-KCj0qZQultjVDT5IFcUceXOCo4M_20080817.html?mod=tff_main_tff_top Now taking the article into perspective this is nursing we're talking about so, not to take anything for granted but there is always a need for a NURSE.

Poll for those who have already taken NCLEX..
1. how many questions did you take on nclex? 265 1st time, 75 2nd time 2. what study materials did you use? did you take a test review course? [color=#a0522d]i used kaplan and suander's for both times. however, when i took the test the second time i had answered more questions. i also answered all the questions on kaplan qbank and question trainers. my average was 65% on qbank and roughly 62% (give or take a little) on the question trainers. 3. did your son offer any testing (eri, ati, hesi)? hesi 4. how long did you wait for results of the test, or are you still waiting? [color=#a0522d]48 hours 5. what were your thoughts coming out of the test (total disbelief, certainty you had failed, confident you had passed)? when i failed, i was very sorrowful and disappointed. i waited 45 days to retake the test. when i took the test the second time, i was totally confident that i passed. i just knew!!! i also prayed! 6. was this your first attempt at nclex? no good luck to those who are waiting and ++++ thoughts for those who are waiting on results!!

Orientation Woes
Andrew, RN, The situation you described seemed all too familiar. I also work in a CVICU and let's just say I had a crash course, not an orientation. I had seven preceptors and have taken patients by myself because of staffing issues. It's sink or swim. I have contemplated leaving numerous times but now have decided to stick it out. Plus, I believe that the experience gained from working with hearts is invaluable. I talked with my nsg manager and eventually things got better. If you believe that talking to the director will solve orientation issues than do it. If things don't get better, there are other places to work. Anyhoo, sorry that you had to go throw what you went through. It is very scary when you are operating out of your comfort zone. However, it seems as though you handled everything competently...or at your level of competence.

Nursing, a humbling Profession
Let's face it...nurses rock!! We are intelligent, considerate, conscientious, capable, caring and sooo much more. I also have noticed that nursing is a very humbling profession (From the RN to the CNA). We get into the very private innermost thoughts of our patients. We share their high and low times. It's amazing. List three things that you have seen/done in your nursing career that has humbled you (good exp, bad exp, funny or sad exp). How has this made you a better person? Thanks for sharing.
