what questions to ask-thinking ahead
i've been orienting on a busy med/surg floor for the past 3 wks.... i'm still not as fast as the experienced nurses and i don't plan to be....i'm going to work at my comfort speed...after all these are patients lives we are dealing with. speed comes with time and as for organization.....the first 2 wks i was with all different preceptors so i picked and choose things that did that i wanted to include to make my life as a nurse easier (and still learning everyday)......honestly, in my humble opinion, nursing is a learn as you go approach! you can't learn to pt manage or organize in a classroom, you'll have to find what works for you and roll with it :)

Freaking out over NCLEX test results
I took my test Friday at 8am, its supposed to be 48 hours until you get results....is that BUSINESS days or days? The computer shut off after 85 questions.....I just don't think I did well and these are THE LONGEST hours of my life.

Udall (sp??) dialysis
Can someone please explain to me what exactly a Udall is? I'm assuming its where the dialysis machine is hooked up to the patient to filter the blood? I heard it in report today and I'm just not overly familiar with the term. Lordy petey sakes, I never knew you could learn so much in 3 wks......nursing SCHOOL was just the tip of the iceberg! :omy:

New nurse blues
I realize this is an old post---but I am glad I stumbled across it! I'm glad I'm not the only one out there that has these fears! Hopefully things get better with time .... b/c I feel nursing school didn't teach nearly enough and I too feel overwhelmed. Trying to take it day by day and learn as much as I can. :typingabby

Tips for nurses in their first year of nursing
I appreciate all the advice given! This site has been wonderful and just the type of advice I needed. Last wk was my 1st wk as a nurse on a med/surg floor and I was totally overwhelmed, so much stuff we didn't even COVER in school, I was starting to think maybe nursing was a mistake and how can I ever learn to be as proficient as the nurses I was working with. So I'm glad to hear that being overwhelmed is normal.
